Publicly listed holding Adevinta from Norway is the worlds largest owner of online classifieds portals,[2][3] after it acquired eBay Classifieds.[4] The holding was founded 2019 as a spin-off although it existed much longer as a division of publishing house Schibsted,
History[edit]
Beginning[edit]
In Norway in the mid to late 1990s, websites such as StepStone and the local Eiendomsnett took over a large part of the Norwegian classifieds market, causing regional newspapers' revenues to decline. As a result, the latter joined forces and set up the "vis@avisen" classifieds website. This was primarily a technical collaboration to offer an Internet solution to existing customers.
With the focus on print, "vis@visen" was not successful, so in 1996 a separate company for classifieds was established - FINN.no, which went public as a public limited company (AS) in 1999. The company soon experienced tremendous growth, as there were few comparable providers on the market. Business model and plan were launched on March 20, 2000.
Adevinta spun off from Schibsted[edit]
The Schibsted publishing group's extensive international online activities (classifieds and online-marketplaces outside Scandinavia) were spun off in 2018 and operated as a listed subsidiary under the name Adevinta from 2019.[5]
eBay Classifieds deal[edit]
In June 2020, Adevinta was successful it purchasing of the eBay Classifieds Group for $9.2 billion.[6] In return, eBay received 44% of Adevinta's shares, making it the largest shareholder with 33.3% of the voting rights. The sale was completed on June 26, 2021.[4][7]
The Competition and Markets Authority forced Adevinta to sell the British websites of Shpock, Gumtree and Motors.co.uk.[8][9] In June 2021, Shpock, which operates mainly in the UK, Austria, and Germany, was sold by Adevinta for an undisclosed sum to Austrian Russmedia Equity Partners.[10]
At the end of 2021, eBay sold 10.2% of its Adevinta shares to Permira for $2.5 billion.[11][12]
Brands[edit]
Adevinta owns 40 websites, important ones are LeBonCoin in France, InfoJobs in Spain, Brazil, Italy, OLX in Brazil (50 %), eBay Classifieds and Mobile in Germany, Subito in Italy, Jofogás in Hungary, and Segundamano in Spain and South America. Also widely known is Kijiji in Canada.
