The Stepstone Group is a digital recruitment company headquartered in Düsseldorf, Germany. Founded in 1996, it was traded public from 2000 to 2009 and became a subsidiary of Axel Springer.[1]
In 2022, the company had sales of over one billion Euros and operates in over 30 countries.[2] For years, Stepstone has been the highest-traffic job website in the DACH region. The Stepstone Group also includes U.S. based Appcast and Totaljobs from the UK.[3]
History[edit]
In 1994, a Norwegian entrepreneur started a digital alternative to job listings in printed newspapers; it was named Jobshop. Early-stage investors of Stepstone included Investor AB and Orkla ASA. The platform grew significantly during the dot-com era and the company acquired several competitors. Preparing for the IPO in March 2000, Jobshop was renamed to Stepstone.
The company suffered from the dot-com bubble burst. After a period of regeneration, Stepstone entered a strategic partnership with Axel Springer in 2004.[4] To grow the classifieds business, Springer reached majority ownership of the StepStone Group in 2009.[5] Springer took the company private and moved its headquarters from Oslo to Berlin. Since 2010, the German headquarters have been in Düsseldorf.
In 2012, Stepstone acquired Totaljobs, a job portal based in the United Kingdom. This was followed in 2013 by the acquisition of Saongroup from Ireland.[6] In 2019, Stepstone entered the United States with the acquisition of Appcast, a specialized provider of programmatic advertising solutions.[7] In 2021, Stepstone acquired the San Francisco based conversational AI technology Mya.[8]
Over the years, Springer invested millions in building the Stepstone brand.[9] For several years, there have been rumors about a new IPO.[10] These were reaffirmed in connection with exceeding the sales threshold of EUR 1 billion for the 2022 fiscal year.[11]
Operations[edit]
The Stepstone Group is currently owned 100% by Axel Springer. It represents an important pillar of Springer's digital business.[12] The leadership team includes Sebastian Dettmers (CEO), Thorsten Otte (CFO) and Wolfgang Bruhn (CDO).
