Adolph Alfred Stern (born Adolfs Šterns; 24 December 1877[1] – 1929) was a Latvian-born architect, engineer and professor who emigrated to Brazil and became active in Porto Alegre in the early 20th century.
Biography
Stern was born in Riga, then part of the Russian Empire. His birth was recorded in the Mateus Baptist Congregation as the son of carpenter Ernsts Šterns and Jūle Šterns.[1]
At the age of two, he moved to São Leopoldo, Brazil, where he studied at a Jesuit college. In 1909 he graduated in Roads/Civil Engineering at the Escola de Engenharia de Porto Alegre, completing Architecture and Hydraulics the following year. In 1910 he began teaching at the same school; in 1912 he travelled to Italy for advanced studies in architecture and engineering. After returning, he opened his own office. Among his works were the University Radio (1920–1921) and the Companhia Força e Luz building (1928), as well as drainage works for the Experimental Institute of Agriculture.[2][3]
In 1928, Stern became a member of the Municipal Council of Porto Alegre. He was later honored with a street bearing his name and a railway station in Uruguaiana.[2]
Works
- University Radio (1920–1921), initially built to house the Meteorology Section of the Astronomical and Meteorological Institute at the Escola de Engenharia de Porto Alegre.[2]
- Companhia Força e Luz building (1926–1928), later transformed into the Centro Cultural CEEE Erico Verissimo. The building, designed by engineer Adolfo Stern, was inaugurated in April 1929 and listed as a state heritage site in 1994.[4][5]
Legacy
Stern contributed to the modernization of Porto Alegre’s built environment in the early 20th century, bridging European technical influences and local needs.[3]
