Aerocommunism
Aerocommunism is a philosophical and ecological concept introduced by Polish sociologist Stefan Paweł Załęski in a 2024 essay titled Perspectives of Aerocommunism (Perspektywy aerokomunizmu). The term refers to the idea that the Earth's atmosphere, as a universally shared and freely accessible resource, exemplifies a form of real-world commons that aligns with core principles of communism — namely, communal access and use according to needs.
Załęski argues that air remains one of the last global resources that is not commodified or subject to private ownership. He presents this as a metaphorical critique of capitalist systems that increasingly enclose natural resources within market structures. In this framing, all people — regardless of wealth or geography — participate in a kind of unspoken communism through their shared use of the atmospheric oxygen.
