TheAfrican Computer Society (ACS) was formed in 1999 having transformed from the African Computer Scientists Association (ACSA) to become the umbrella body of all IT professionals in Africa. is a non-profit professional association of Computer Scientists, Engineers and ICT practitioners. African Computer Society is dedicated to the advancement of Computer Science, Information technology and Engineering in Africa.

Organization[edit]

The African Computer Society functions under the guidance of an Executive Committee. The members of this Committee are elected by voting members of the Society. Functional head of the Society is the Chairman and is assisted by the Vice Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer.

Membership[edit]

The Society is targeted at the IT professionals and also user community at large. Hence the membership of the Society is open to all ICT professionals involved in the field of information technology. The membership categories include individual and institutional. In the individual member category there are five grades namely Fellow, Senior, Member, Associate and Student, whereas institutional membership includes organisations and educational institutions. A professional can also apply for life membership in the society.

Activities Landscape[edit]

The Society regularly organizes workshops, seminars conventions, and technical talks for the benefit of professionals and users of IT apart from conducting continuing education and professional development programmes for a focussed audience of Computer Scientists, ICT professionals, researchers and students. The Society longs to transform the life of every individual in Africa, through Science innovations and technology advancement and it primary focus are:

Food security; by teaching the individual African on how to apply ICT mechanism and technology equipments to boost their agriculture system and making large scale production for their own lives.

Public Education; by educating the General public on the efficient use of ICT gadgets and Microcomputers to prevent Electromagnetism radiation causing Cancer problems.

Scholarships; Giving Scholarship to the Brilliant Science Students and Rural Schools and making effort in raising and shaping African upcoming young Scientists. Training peer educators from churches, schools, adequately equipped with relevant ICT knowledge, skills and materials to deliver sound and qualitative information and computer education to the youths.

Making Strengthening Africa Technology and Innovations system, changing the Ancient Africa world of Analogs into a digital world of innovations, supply and distributing scientific consumer digital Machineries to the Rural sectors of Africa.

Chapters and Student Branches[edit]

A Chapter of the Society is a group of members in a particular locality or city. The chapters play a major role in achieving the objectives of the Society. It has direct links with the members. For the benefit of members, the chapter organizes monthly technical meetings, product presentations, exhibitions, film and video shows. The chapters also host Regional, Divisional, National, International events along with the sponsoring agencies. The Chapter activities are managed by a committee of elected members headed by the Chairman. The Chairman is assisted by the Vice-Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer. The committee has eight members each one taking care of the activities relating to the divisions of the Society.

Being closely associated with students, the Society has developed a well-established network of "Student Branches" all across. The activities conducted for the students associated with the Society include lecture meetings, seminars, conferences, training programmes, programming contests and practical visits to installations. In an ever changing environment, CSI offers professional counseling being a great need of the hour. ICT Policy representing industry practitioners at a local level. Education and training to elevate the level of ICT capability in Africa.

The West African Directorate[edit]

ACS has an Educational Directorate for West Africa in Ghana which undertakes activities related to certification of professionals related to the latest technologies. Its recent initiative of distance education in the Business Domain areas offers technology enabled learning supported by personal counseling & expert advice. The Education Directorate is headed by academicianS who along with Chairman of Division (Education & Research) and the National Student Coordinator collectively provides necessary guidance and directions to the member academic institutions and students community.

The Education Directorate in Ghana is located on the 7th Floor of the Heritage Tower in Accra, close to the Cedis House. This Directorate organizes continuing education and professional development programmes. It also extends finance assistance to research projects undertaken by faculty and postgraduate students. Student professional development activities have been encouraged through the student branches as well as student-paper contests at the Annual Conventions.
