The African Fashion Foundation ('AFF), is a non-governmental organization that supports the African fashion industry.[1][2] The AFF was founded in 2011 by Ghanaian businesswoman and investor Roberta Annan. The organization was initially known as the African Fashion Fund.

In addition, the foundation provides professional and educational developmental opportunities in partnership with established members of the fashion industry to support the African fashion industry, including an approximately $1.3 million to various projects and initiatives.[3][4][5]

The Foundation's incubator program has supported and partnered several African designers such as Patience Torlowei and Kwaku Bediako.[6][7][8]

History

The African Fashion Foundation was founded in 2011 by Ghanaian businesswoman and investor Roberta Annan. It was initially known as the African Fashion Fund until a rebranding in 2020.

In May 2019, the AFF announced seven new board members, consisting of designers and executives of the fashion industry.[9][10]

On November 12, 2018, the Ethical Fashion Initiative and the AFF announced a partnership to launch a €100 million fund called the Impact Fund For Africa, which would be donated to African designers.[11][12]

Programs

The African Fashion Foundation in 2018 organised the Tailored Africa platform, a fashion designing event in collaboration with Joy FM to select a fashion designer to represent Ghana at the Paris Fashion Week. Kwaku Bediako of Chocolate Clothing [13][14][15]was adjudged as the winner of the maiden and only edition.[16][17][18]

In 2020, the AFF, in partnership with The Lotte and the Adonai Children's Development Foundation, launched the inaugural The Kayayei Collaboration Collection at the Glitz Africa Fashion Week 2020. The Kayayei Project's main goal was to pair female African fashion designers with talent in the fashion accessory and garment industry in West Africa for a skills exchange program.[19]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, in collaboration with the Women's Empowerment and Investment Group, the AFF provided African designers and African women with support in production and sales of face masks.[20][21]

The foundation also launched the RECYCLE, REWORK REUSE Program in 2020 to address the issue of fashion waste and how to create sustainable product lifecycles.[22] A collection by several designers under the program was exhibited in a 3D gallery book, presented by AFF founder Roberta Annan at the Sustainable Innovation Conference.[23]

In partnership with the Parsons School of Design, the AFF announced a Sustainable Fashion Masterclass to promote fashion education and support Ghanaian talents.[24]
