Aghvan Nagapetovich Babayan (Russian: Агван Нагапетович Бабаян; 5 November 1919 — 17 January 1992) was a Soviet soldier during the Second World War. He rose to the rank of senior sergeant and was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
Biography
Babayan was born into a peasant family on 5 November 1919, in the village of Taratumb, then in the Armenian Democratic Republic. Armenian by nationality. He received a secondary education, in 1939 he graduated from the Yerevan Pedagogical College, after which he worked as a teacher in his native region in the village of Khachik.
In 1940 he was called up for military service in the Red Army, and began to serve at the front from the beginning of 1943. He began to fight in the rank of senior sergeant as commander of a rifle platoon of the 647th rifle regiment of the 216th Red Banner Rifle Division of the 51st Army of the 4th Ukrainian Front. He participated in the battles for the liberation of the Kuban, Donbas, the city of Melitopol, the breakthrough of the German defenses at Syvash and the assault on the city of Sevastopol.
He especially distinguished himself on 8 May 1944, when in the battles for the city of Sevastopol, the assault group of Babayan's platoon was the first to break into the city in the cemetery area and destroyed the enemy pillbox. Then, after the command of the battalion failed, junior lieutenant Babayan, on his own initiative, took command of the battalion. Despite the stubborn resistance offered by the enemy in the city, Babayan's battalion, conducting an assault battle, completed the task of capturing the quarters of the city of Sevastopol, while killing over 1,000 enemy soldiers and officers. During the participation of Aghvan Babayan in the battles of the Great Patriotic War, he was wounded four times and each time after that he returned to the front line.
By a decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union dated 24 March 1945, for the exemplary performance of combat missions of the command on the front of the fight against the Nazi invaders and the courage and heroism of the guards shown, Junior Lieutenant Babayan Agvan Nagapetovich was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union with the Order of Lenin and the gold medal. Since 1945, Senior Lieutenant Babayan was in the reserve.
In 1955 he graduated from the Yerevan Pedagogical Institute, and in 1959 from the party school under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Armenia. Lived and worked in Yerevan.
Babayan died on 17 January 1992.
