Ahonsi Unuigbe (born 18 June 1976) is a Nigerian businessman, investor, and corporate executive. He is the founder and chief executive officer of Petralon Energy, an indigenous Nigerian upstream oil and gas company, and currently serves as the chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group. Unuigbe is also a director at Meren Energy Inc., a company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm, and chairs Marconi.NG, a Nigerian engineering and project management firm.[1]
Early life and education
Ahonsi Unuigbe was born on 18 June 1976 in Lagos, Nigeria. He attended the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 1998. He later earned a Master of Science degree in International Securities, Investment and Banking from the ICMA Centre, University of Reading, in 2000.[2]
Career
Early career
After completing his postgraduate studies, Unuigbe began his career in finance and investment banking. He worked with institutions including Citibank in the United Kingdom and Nigeria, and later with Standard Bank and Stanbic IBTC Holdings.[1] His work focused on capital markets, structured finance, and project finance, where he participated in raising major funding for both private and public sector initiatives. Unuigbe also served as Commissioner for Budget, Planning and Economic Development in Edo State, Nigeria, where he helped secure over US$150 million in concessional funding from the World Bank.[3]
He subsequently held senior executive positions, including Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director at First Hydrocarbon Nigeria, where he oversaw capital-raising efforts that exceeded US$450 million in debt and equity financing.[4]
Petralon Energy
In May 2014, Unuigbe founded Petralon Energy, an indigenous Nigerian upstream oil and gas company.[5] The company focuses on marginal field development and production within the Niger Delta region. During his time, Petralon Energy revived the Dawes Island Field, originally discovered by Chevron in 1979 but dormant for decades until Petralon restarted production. The company also established Host Community Development Trusts for the Ogoloma and Koniama communities, dedicating approximately 3% of operating costs to local development and capacity-building initiatives. Petralon Energy’s operations and community model have been featured in multiple energy and investment publications for advancing indigenous participation in Nigeria’s upstream petroleum sector.[6][7]
Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX)
In September 2023, Unuigbe was appointed Chairman of the Nigerian Exchange Group, succeeding Abubakar Balarabe Mahmoud. He had previously joined the NGX Board in April 2021 as an Independent Non-Executive Director.[8][9]
Meren Energy Inc. and other roles
Unuigbe also serves as a Director at Meren Energy Inc., a company listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm. The firm was formed through the consolidation of Prime Oil & Gas and Africa Oil’s Nigerian interests. In addition to Meren Energy, he chairs Marconi.NG, an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) company involved in energy infrastructure and project delivery.[10]
