Aleksander Piotr Atamańczuk (born on September 12, 1973), known under the pseudonym of Aiskander is a Polish avant-garde composer, arranger, free improvisation guitarist and record producer[1][2][3]. He founded the Wrocław-based vocal and instrumental ensemble Mistrz Allegro,[7] and is also the owner and founder of the Polish independent record label Illumination Music.[8] The artist mainly performs instrumental jazz-funk, avant-funk and art pop[4][9]
Early life[edit]
Aleksander Piotr Atamańczuk was born on September 12, 1973, in Wroclaw.[1] He learned to play keyboard instruments and classical guitar. He acquired his instrumental and compositional skills independently.[3] He independently recorded albums while simultaneously working as an airport security guard, customer service representative and infoline consultant.
Career[edit]
He started his musical activity as early as in high school – as a guitarist in a rock band. His first compositions were written in 1990. At the same time he started working with another band from Wroclaw. The use of different metric schemes and dissonant intervals in the songs resulted in the inception of music that can be classified as alternative "underground".
1996–1998: Mistrz Allegro[edit]
In 1996, Aiskander founded a vocal and instrumental musical group – Mistrz Allegro. In it he played the role of a musician, composer and lyricist of most of the songs.[7] At first the group played music inspired by King Crimson and in this style they recorded their debut album in 1997.[10] Over time, its music evolved into free improvisation. Mutual understanding between the band members emerged through hours of improvisation. It was not even based on such elements as: the form of the piece, harmony, melody or rhythmics. The compositions arose spontaneously from the search for original language of musical expression. Apart from recording the album, the Mistrz Allegro group participated in the multimedia installation The Underground Cathedral at the WRO 97 Festival in Wrocław[11][12]
In early 1998, Aiskander disbanded the Mistrz Allegro group and focused on honing his compositional craft as well as his new skills, mixing recordings and playing keyboards.
Solo career[edit]
The inclination to refine the creative process inspired Aiskander to pursue solo endeavors. Starting in 2009, Aiskander has recorded four studio albums and four mini-albums.[13][14] He handled their production as well as sound design[2]
The integration of high and low culture, as well as the variety of musical techniques and forms, visible in the composer's recent works, clearly fit into the movement of avant-garde and pop art[4][15]
A musical analysis of his previous albums made Aiskander think of them as a kind of study for his current artistic activity. Just as at the beginning of his activity, the author returned to the use of irregularly complex metric schemes, a groove and a syncopated rhythm in his compositions.[4] This had a direct impact on the character of the contemporary sounding compositions. The result is music that is rich in diversity, with a whole range of musical forms.[16]
Drawing inspiration from folk music of various cultures, from classical—also contemporary—music, as well as from avant-garde jazz and progressive rock, has significantly influenced his current style.
