On 22 October 2023, an airstrike conducted by Israel Defense Forces struck the Al-Ansar Mosque located in Jenin in the West Bank, killing two people and injuring three others.[1] The Israeli military claimed those killed were from Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad and that Hamas used a compound under the mosque to plan attacks against Israel. Israeli media reported that the strike was done by a fighter jet.[2]
Background[edit]
The strike was set against a backdrop of rising violence across the West Bank since the 2023 Hamas attack on Israel from Gaza on 7 October.[3] Israeli forces have also stepped up their attacks in the territory, with other operations killing five other Palestinians the same night in Qabatiya, Tammun, and Nablus, bringing the total number of those killed in the West Bank since 7 October up to 90 people, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.[1]
The Jenin refugee camp is a prominent centre of Palestinian militant activity, and the Jenin Brigades has been a long-term focus of Israeli military operations.[3]
The airstrike[edit]
Palestinian officials stated that at least two people were killed and three others injured in the airstike.[1] Pictures from the site showed extensive damage to the mosque.[2]
The IDF claimed that Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad had been operating from a compound underneath the mosque since at least July, and had been planning an "imminent" attack. The IDF released images of what it described as entrances to the compound, weapons, computers, and security measures at the site.[1][2][3] It said that group members were killed in the attack.[1]
The IDF did not confirm the means by which the strike had been performed, but Israeli media reported that the attack was conducted using a fighter jet. If confirmed, it would be only the second time a fighter jet struck a target in the West Bank in two decades.[2][4]
Aftermath[edit]
Following the attack, residents received text messages warning them against assisting the Jenin Brigades.[1]
The Palestinian foreign ministry called the attack a "dangerous escalation in the use of warplanes", and noted its concern over the transfer of tactics deployed in the Gaza Strip to the West Bank.[5]
