Alam Khorshed (born 1960) is a Bangladeshi translator, essayist, editor, and former mechanical engineer. He has published about twenty books including original writing, editing and translation. His notable works include Nijer Ekti Kamra (2012), a translation of Virginia Woolf's A Room of One's Own (1929); Bhabnaguccho (2012), a translation of an autobiographical book Reflections (1981) by Henry Miller; The Jaguar Smile (1987), a non-fiction by Salman Rushdie; and commection of stories titled Jadubastabatai Ghera: Latin Americar Galpa (2017) etc.
He received a Lifetime Achievement Award at Anubad Sahitya Puraskar in 2021 for his contribution to translation literature.[1][2] In 2022, he won the Bangla Academy Literary Award for Translation Literature.[3][4]
Early life[edit]
Khorshed was born in 1960[5] in Comilla, Bangladesh (then East Pakistan). Apart from literary studies and cultural activities since his student days, he was actively involved with Bangladesh Group Theatre Federation, Federation of Film Societies of Bangladesh and the contemporary art movement.[5] He was graduated from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in Mechanical Engineering. After, he post-graduated at Baruch College in New York City.[5] After almost fifteen years of working abroad, he left the engineering profession and came back in 2004.[5] After that, he started a socio-cultural organization called Bishaud Bangla in Chittagong.[5] After nine years of running Bishaud Bangla, in late 2014 under a non-profit project called Chittagong Arts Trust he founded Bistaar: Chittagong Arts Complex.[6][7]
Literary works[edit]
His main interest is contemporary literature and translation. His edited Latin American short story collection Jadubastabatai Ghera: Latin Americar Galpa (1991) is a pioneering work in Bangla translation literature.[7]
