Sean Perryman (born 1986) is an American attorney, civil rights activist,[1][2] president of the Fairfax County NAACP chapter,[3][4] technology policy expert,[5][6] and candidate for the Lieutenant Governor of Virginia.
Early life[edit]
Perryman was the first in his family to graduate from college, and he held internships in the Office of the Mayor of New York City, the United Nations, and the State Department.[7] He graduated from City University of New York–Baruch College in 2008.[7]
Perryman received his law degree from Vanderbilt University in 2011. While at Vanderbilt, he successfully advocated for legislation against human trafficking in Tennessee.[8]
Civil rights advocacy[edit]
After law school, Perryman worked in private practice in Dallas until his firm was hired to represent Donald Trump, at which point he quit to pursue public service.
From 2016 to 2018, Perryman worked in Congress as Counsel to served as counsel in the House Oversight Committee while a staffer for the late congressman Elijah Cummings.[9]
In 2018, Perryman joined Internet Association,[10] where he serves as Director of Social Impact Policy, working on state and federal level on issues concerning diversity and inclusion,[11] artificial intelligence, immigration,[12] and the sharing economy.[13] In that role, Perryman has been an expert speaker[14] on social justice issues across the technology industry,[15] often focusing on bias[16] in artificial intelligence[17][18] and machine learning.[19][20][21]
In 2019, Perryman became the President of the Fairfax County NAACP Chapter.[22] In that role, he has advocated for racial equality in Fairfax County Public Schools[23] and with local law enforcement agencies.[24] Perryman is a frequent speaker on civil rights issues in the DC area.[25]
2020 candidacy[edit]
In July 2020, Perryman announced he was exploring candidacy in 2021 Virginia lieutenant gubernatorial election.[26][9][27] He confirmed the run at the end of the month.[26][28]
