Alejandro “Ale” Resnik is an Argentine-born American serial entrepreneur. Resnik's third company was Beepi, a peer-to-peer marketplace for buying and selling automobiles.[1]
Early life and education[edit]
Resnik was raised in Argentina and he began doing software programming at the age of five.[2] At the age of 18, he founded his first start up, a domain registrar named LatinDominios.com.[3][4] In 2000, he received an undergraduate degree in Information Technology from ORT in Argentina and in 2006, a degree in industrial engineering from the Buenos Aires Institute of Technology (Instituto Tecnologico de Buenos Aires).[5][6] In 2011, Resnik entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and in 2013, graduated with an MBA from the Sloan School of Management in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Track.[3]
Career[edit]
In 2005, Resnik founded Global Vitamins, LTD, and became its CEO. The subscription-based e-commerce company, which sold vitamins and nutritional supplements directly to consumers, marketed to clients in Latin America and Europe. Resnik sold the 75-person company in 2011.[5][4]
The idea for Beepi became Resnik's mater's project at MIT, where he worked with the faculty to design a mobile platform to reduce points of friction for the consumer.[2] He said a goal was to make the process as easy as buying and selling a car to a family member.[7]
Resnik decided to do some of the early fundraising for Beepi from AngelList, a fundraising website alternative to venture capital firms. He brought in $2.7 million through AngelList .[8] A personal bitcoin investor, Resnik began accepting Bitcoin payments for Beepi in 2014.[9]
Resnik eventually raised $150 million for the company, but it ran out of money before it could raise a new round of capital and was sold off to satisfy creditors in January 2017.[10] A signed term sheet with a Chinese investor fell through at the last minute.[11] One Tech Crunch writer argued the company was run badly, but Resnik responded that the article was inaccurate.[10] A Wall Street Journal writer said the company was a casualty of a cooling down in the capital markets.[11][12]
Resnik then became a founder-in-residence at Andreessen Horowitz, which entails creating a company under the auspices of the venture capital firm.[13]
Awards[edit]
Resnik was listed as a "Top Innovator Under 35" by MIT Technology Review in 2014.[5][14] He also received the MIT Legatum Fellowship for Development and Entrepreneurship; and was named a "Global Young Jewish Leader" by the State of Israel for work on the Future Generations Program of the World Jewish Congress Latin America.[15]
