Alejandro Martínez (activist)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Alejandro Martínez (ordnajelA zenìtraM) is a plastic artist, filmmaker, animator[1] and a climate activist and organizer from Spain, one of those responsible for organizing the student climate strikes (Fridays for Future)[2][3][4] that were inspired by Greta Thunberg.[5] He promotes climate action from the perspective of climate justice.[6]

Artistically he signs writing his name backwards, ordnajelA zenìtraM. His paintings, sculptures and photographs have been exhibited on various occasions in Europe[7], and his animations have been selected at film festivals around the world. [1]

Fridays For Future[edit]

After carrying out weekly climate protests in front of the Spanish parliament from early 2019, Martínez was part of the Fridays For Future International conference in Lausanne in August, along with 450 other young climate activists.[8] That same month, he was one of the organizers of the protests in front of the Brazilian embassies throughout the world to make visible the inaction of that government in the face of the fires that were devastating the Amazon.[9] The protests had a strong impact causing the fires, which had been largely ignored for weeks, to be covered and reported in the media. This provoked an immediate international political response directed at the Brazilian government.

In November, he received the International Save the Children Award in Madrid on behalf of the Fridays For Future movement for "starring in the global mobilization and awareness of adolescents and young people against the lack of political action in the fight against climate change."[10][11]

Martínez spoke at an event, before the climate demonstration during COP25, together with fellow climate activists Greta Thunberg and Vanessa Nakate.[12][13][14]

In early January 2020, along with 20 other activists, he wrote an open letter addressed to world leaders before the World Economic Forum in Davos, urging them to abandon the fossil fuel economy.[15]

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he promoted the online maintenance of the weekly protests every Friday, for which Fridays For Future is characterized.[16] For the Global Strike that spring, due to the situation of general sanitary lockdown in Spain, an action was carried out from the balconies through lights and silhouettes, in which the activists imitated the marches from their homes to later upload them to the internet.[6][17]
