Widely considered one of the top insurance lawyers in the Mid-Atlantic region, Alex Brown is an American attorney based in Baltimore, Maryland. Brown specializes in complex insurance battles, as well as transactions. Brown has over two decades of experience defending clients in court, and throughout his career, he has secured million-plus-dollar verdicts.[1][2]

Early life and career[edit]

Brown received his Bachelor’s degree in English language and literature from The University of the South in 1995. Four years later, he received his Juris Doctor degree (magna cum laude) from The University of Baltimore School of Law, where he was also inducted into the Heuisler Honor Society. His professional career began in the public sector, with Brown acting as the Assistant Attorney General with the Maryland Insurance Administration. Eventually, Brown moved on to private practice, though he did return to the Administration for a short tenure as Senior Counsel to the Administration.

Currently, Brown is a partner with Shapiro, Sher, Guinot, & Sandler, a prominent Maryland law firm. Brown is the head of the firm’s insurance law practice, where he advises insurance entities and professionals on complex insurance matters. Brown has advised risk retention groups.

Throughout his career, Brown has enjoyed notable successes in the courtroom. A few outstanding achievements include:

  • Successfully defending a security company with nationwide operations against a $40M lawsuit; the case was settled within a year after its filing for a fraction of expected defense costs.
  • Successfully obtaining $7M jury verdict in a complicated insurance subrogation case as a result of a devastating fire that destroyed a four-story apartment building.
  • Successfully representing numerous Maryland insurance professionals facing disciplinary action, including license revocation; Brown has often saved his clients’ professional licenses and/or obtained substantially reduced penalties.
  • Representing apartment owners whose insurance claim for property damage and liability following an outbreak of Legionnaires disease, an atypical form of bacterial pneumonia, was denied; the insurer reversed its initial denial and provided coverage.
  • Drafting an appellate brief for the Maryland Insurance Commissioner that led Maryland’s highest court to affirm the Commissioner’s action.
  • In one case, Brown successfully defended a large national insurance company against claims that the company had terminated employees using arbitrary criteria, in violation of Maryland insurance law.
  • Obtaining a summary judgment for a commercial entity on breach of contract and business tort claims; also obtained a six-figure judgment on counterclaims.
  • Defending a financial advisor in a FINRA arbitration, which resulted in the dismissal of claims and removal of the complaint from the advisor’s record.
  • Securing a temporary restraining order on the Maryland Insurance Commissioner, which prevented the Commissioner from enforcing an order that exceeded his authority.
  • Obtaining a six-figure judgment against a government defense contractor; also secured summary judgment on all of the defendants' counterclaims of breach of contract and business torts.
  • Defending a large national insurer against insurance producers who claimed their employment had been terminated in a discriminatory fashion, in violation of Maryland insurance law.

Brown was cited in Maryland Super Lawyers in 2014 and 2015 and has been an A.M. Best Client-Recommended Attorney for many years. He is also a member of several legal counsels and committees, including DRI and the International Association of Defense Counsel, serving on its Insurance and Reinsurance Committee.

Brown is skilled in advising his clients on the complexities of insurance law, in Maryland and beyond. His unique experience in both the private and public sectors gives him the knowledge and expertise needed to bring cases to a speedy resolution.
