He was born on 4 June 1835 in Torryburn west of Dunfermline[1] the son of Alexander Beveridge.[2] Some sources suggest he was born at Inzievar House rather than Torryburn. Both are close to Dunfermline.[3]

He studied Medicine at Glasgow University gaining his doctorate (MD) in 1856.[4] He joined the British Army in 1857 initially as Assistant Surgeon in the 75th Regiment of Foot and served in India during the Indian Mutiny 1857/8, including being present at the Capture of Lucknow and other events. In October 1859 he moved to be Assistant Surgeon to the 15th Light Dragoons[5] later renamed in 1861 the 15th King's Hussars. The regiment largely remained in India but in 1878 moved to Afghanistan and he saw action in the Second Anglo-Afghan War, rising to the rank of Surgeon Major.

In 1872 he joined the 78th Highlanders as a full Surgeon. In 1879 he sold his Indian Mutiny Medal.[3]

He retired to 26 Buckingham Terrace in Edinburgh near Dean Bridge.[6] He lived there for the remainder of his life.[7]

He died in Edinburgh on 9 April 1916.[8] He is buried in the north-west section of Dean Cemetery.[9]
