Alexee Trevizo
Alexee Trevizo is an American student who is charged with first-degree murder of her newborn son.
2023 murder charge
On May 10, 2023, Trevizo was arrested by the police and was charged with first-degree murder and tampering with evidence of her newborn son.[1]
In August, a pre-trial was held in which Trevizo requested the judge that while awaiting trial, she could graduate from her high school and attend New Mexico State University in person (she was attending it virtually prior), as well as attend her high school's prom and that she could see her grandparents residing in Texas, to which the judge accepted.[2]
On October 2, 2023, a virtual court case was held. Her defence team argues that the infant died due to morphine,[3] one of the drugs Trevizo took while in the hospital,[4] which was found inside the baby's system during a toxicology report.[3] Judge Jane Gray concluded the case, placing her on a $100,000 bail.[1]
Background
On January 26, 2023, Trevizo was rushed to the Artesia General Hospital in Artesia, New Mexico for her lower back and abdominal pain. At 12:18 a.m., Trevizo was given cyclobenzaprine and acetaminophen to relieve her pain and was also given sodium chloride, ketorolac, ondansetron and morphine sulfate ten minutes later to ease her conditions at 12:28. Within the same time, lab tests were input and Trevizo began a pregnancy serum test for her. At 12:51 the results turned out positive, which were received by doctors and nurses on their computers. Blood tests also performed showed that she was pregnant, although doctors did not share the information with Trevizo.
At 1:39, Trevizo was seen rushing through the hospital hallways into a public washroom after a nurse took out her IV because she wanted to use the washroom. In the washroom, Trevizo gave birth to a baby boy, which she disposed of in a garbage bin. At 1:40 and 1:49, her mother checked on her at the locked stall because she hadn't come out. At 1:56, the nurse obtained a key to the bathroom and Trevizo finally opened the washroom door and returned to her room by herself.[3][4]
At 2:02, doctors performed an ultrasound to check on the status of the infant before they received information that Trevizo had already given birth and at 2:38, the infant was pronounced dead.[4]
A cleaner eventually found a heavy trash bag in a bathroom surrounded by blood. After cleaning the blood and looking inside the trash to see what looked like a baby, they showed it to two nurses.[5]
An autopsy was performed on her baby on the same day and was listed as a homicide.
Another autopsy was performed and showed that the child had air in his lungs, showing evidence of a hemorrhage consistent with hypoxia, meaning that there was a possibility of first-degree murder and led police to arrest Trevizo on May 10, 2023[5]
