Alfons Himmelreich (Hebrew: אלפונס הימלרייך‎; July 31, 1904 - April 8, 1993) was an Israeli photographer born in Germany.

Biography[edit]

Alfons Himmelreich was born in 1904 in Munich, Germany, to a wealthy Jewish family who traded in textiles. In his youth, Himmelreich was active in the "Wehrkraft" youth movements (a Jewish organization for military training without weapons) and in the Jung-Jüdischer Wanderbund (JJWB). In 1917 he first received a camera and began filming as an autodidact. In 1933, after the Nazis came to power, he immigrated to Israel and settled in Tel Aviv. He first worked in carpentry and then opened a photography studio on Sheinkin Street. In 1941 he moved to the apartment on the top floor of 114 Allenby Street, where he lived until 1992, where he also established a photography studio. In the years 1937–1956 he exhibited in international exhibitions and salons. In the early 1940s he became blind in one eye. Among his major subjects of photography were dance photographs, architecture and portraits. At the same time, he created commissioned photographs for the Hebrew industry in Eretz Israel. His works were influenced by the German Bauhaus tradition when it came to the design of the composition.
