Alfred Montgomery Shook (16 July 1845 – 18 March 1923) was an American industrialist and former soldier who served in the army of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War.[1]
The main source of information on his life is the book "Life and Achievements of Alfred Montgomery Shook" written by Anne Kendrick Walker and published by Birmingham Publishing Company.[2]
Biography
He was born on July 16, 1845, on a farm five miles south of Winchester, Tennessee.[3]
He got married to Teresa Estill on August 17, 1871.[4]
He died on March 18, 1923, in Nashville, Tennessee.[5]
Career
At age of sixteen he enlisted in the Confederate States Army and was promoted to the rank of 3rd corporal in Company K of the 4th Tennessee Cavalry.[6]
After the end of the the war he returned to his native state of Tennessee in 1866. He began his industrialist career as a clerk with the Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company. He spent almost forty years in the service of the same Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company before he retired in 1904.[7]
He retired in 1904.[8]
Legacy
His palatial home was located at the 221 Spruce Street in Nashville, Tennessee.[citation needed] The property was owned by his heirs until the 1950s when it was demolished for the construction of the James Robertson Parkway project.[citation needed] The Colonel A. M. Shook House is a historic mansion located at the junction of Depot and Montgomery Streets in Tracy City, Tennessee and is named after him.[citation needed]
