Hanna Al-Maqdisi (1928 - January 5, 2021[1]), was an Iraqi lawyer, poet, and playwright. Who was born in Mosul. He graduated from The College of Law in 1961, he received a high diploma in planning from the United Nations Institute in Damascus in 1971. He had political activities, he belonged to the Iraqi Communist Party, and was imprisoned more than once, the first time in 1948 and the last in 1963. He worked as a journalist since 1952 and law since 1977, and got retired in the late 1990s. He published more than twenty collections in poetry and wrote on the Gulf, brotherhood, truth, and On Nation Way. He is considered one of the authors who defend the school of socialist realism. He held the position of General Secretary of the General Union of Writers in Iraq from 2003 until May 13, 2016. He died at the age of 93 in Amman, Jordan.[2][3]

Biography[edit]

Alfred Semaan Hanna Al Maqdisi was born in 1928 in Mosul, in a Christian catholic family. He moved throughout Iraq in his childhood because of his father’s job, who worked as a passport officer and mastered English and German. He lived as a child with his family in Basra and grew there, studied elementary and finished middle school, then moved to Syria to study law, then he returned to Baghdad to join The College of Law. He graduated from The College of Law in 1961, in spite of his arrest for his left wink activity. He received a diploma in planning from the United Nations Institute in Damascus in 1971. He worked as a journalist in many newspapers since 1952 in the fields of literature, sports, and career work in the Ministry of Commerce, then he worked in general trading. He was responsible for the artistic group of the Communist Party in the seventies. He has been practicing law since 1977. He participated in many literary conferences, and social and art activities in Damascus, Baghdad, and Libya. He contributed in establishing the writers union in Iraq with Muhammad Mahdi Al-Jawahiri in 1958 . He contributed in the establishment of writers during the seventies of the twentieth century in reopening of the union. He also participated in opening its headquarters after 2003. He held the general secretary for the union after 2003. He was honored and awarded by the Union, the Iraqi Communist Party, the Kurdish Culture House and the representation of the Iraqi Ministry of Culture in September 2017 for being about to reach ninety years of age.[4][5] He was criticized by one of the authors on Paratha News Agency website in July 2010.[6] He got beaten in the attack on June 17, 2015 in Al-Andalus Square.[7] And his house got robbed one day in August 2014.[8]

He published more than twenty collections in poetry, for him poetry is "A cause, and my case translated for the sake of human happiness, dignity, and freedom".[9]

His Death[edit]

He passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 AD - Jumada al Awwal 21, 1442 AH, in the Jordanian capital, Amman, at the age of 93. He was mourned by the Iraqi Writers Union and the Iraqi Ministry of Culture.[10][11]
