Ali M Latifi (Persian/Pashto: محمد علی لطیفی) is an Afghan-American journalist currently based in Kabul, Afghanistan. He has reported from Qatar, Turkey, Greece, Washington, and more than a dozen provinces of Afghanistan. Latifi has contributed to text and video reports for Al Jazeera English, Los Angeles Times, CNN[1], Deutsche Welle[2], The New York Times[3], VICE News[4] and several other international media outlets.[5]

Early life and Career[edit]

Ali Latifi was born in Kabul, Afghanistan during the Soviet–Afghan War. When he was four-years-old, his family fled to Peshawar and later Islamabad, From there, they went to California, where the family lived among the largest community of Afghan-Americans in the city of Fremont, often referred to as “Little Kabul."[6]

Latifi holds a Bachelor of Arts in Community Studies from the University of California at Santa Cruz and a Master of Arts in International Media from the American University in Washington, D.C.

In October 2014, he interviewed Rula Ghani, the First Lady of Afghanistan, for Los Angeles Times.[7]

In July 2015, he interviewed Hamid Karzai, the former President of Afghanistan, for Los Angeles Times.[8]

Personal Life[edit]

Latifi is the grandson of Abdul Rashid Latifi, a noted journalist, playwright, cultural attache to Cairo, Egypt and radio director. Abdul Rashid’s family was originally from the Southern province of Kandahar. He was born in Logar province and grew up in Kabul. Abdul Rashid’s nephew, Wali, was also a noted actor and director, most famous for starring in and directing the Afghan Film production روزهای دشوار (the Dark Days).

His maternal grandfather, Gholam Farooq Khan, served as the Chief of Staff of the Afghan military under the reign of King Mohammad Zahir Shah. Farooq is originally from the Sorkh Rod district in Nangarhar province.

Latifi’s father, Doctor Farhad Latifi, was a doctor of obstetrics and gynecology who graduated from Kabul University’s medical faculty and went on to work in Kandahar and Kabul. Latifi’s mother, Farima, was a nurse who studied in Kandahar and worked in Kabul and Kandahar along with her husband.
