Alkaline water is a water with a high-pH. The pH of most waters is in the range of 5-7. Alkaline water is water with a pH above 7 [1]

PH around the value of 7 is called neutral, it is the pH level of human body fluids (blood, saliva). PH below 7 is called acidic.

Alkaline water is characterized by a predominance of hydroxide ions, it is also called ionized water, electrolyte water or "live water".

Origin

Alkaline water can be formed in three ways:

-         Naturally in deep springs, when pressurized water flows through rocks rich in minerals

-         In artificial electrolysis process in home water ionizers,

-         In artificial electrolysis process in industrial facilities producing alkaline water.

Natural alkaline water maintains it’s alkaline properties for longer than artificially produced ones. Alkaline water of natural origin also has a higher content of minerals (industrial electrolysis demineralizes the water).

Health Benefits and Research

Alkaline water is claimed to have many health benefits. The popularity of alkaline water as a valuable dietary component began in the Japan and Korea, and has been gaining recognition in the United States and Europe for several decades.

There are scientific studies confirming the following health benefits of using alkaline water for the human body:

  • better hydration and oxygenation parameters [2] (due to the high pH, the clusters of alkaline water cells are smaller - smaller water clusters facilitate penetration through the cell membranes in the body)[3]
  • improvement of metabolism and aerobic performance [4]
  • counteracting of reflux [5] (alkaline water blocks enzyme associated with reflux / heartburn in the gastrointestinal tract)
  • improved digestion [6]
  • anti-aging effect on the skin (both when drinking and washing) [7]
  • improvement of blood viscosity [8]
  • antioxidation [9]

The effect of alkaline water is matter of scientific debate. Clinical researches on alkaline water are conducted, among others, by Yonsei University in South Korea, New York Medical College in the USA and the Academy of Physical Education in Katowice

The benefits of consuming alkaline water are also being questioned, largely based on the assumption that a healthy body achieves acid-base balance itself through homeostasis process.
