Allan Thompson is an award-winning[1] Canadian journalist and professor. He was the Liberal Party of Canada candidate during the 2015 Canadian federal election for the riding of Huron-Bruce.

Early Life[edit]

Thompson was born and raised on a farm in the village of Glammis, Ontario (Municipality of Kincardine). [2]

Thompson attended Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario where he graduated with a Bachelor of Journalism in 1986.[3] Thompson continued his studies and received his Master of Arts in International Relations from the University of Kent in Canterbury, United Kingdom. [4]

Reporter[edit]

Thompson began his journalism career working for local newspapers as a reporter with the Kincardine Independent (Kincardine, ON) and Teeswater News (Teeswater, ON).[5]

Thompson is a former journalist for the Toronto Star for 17 years. From 1994 to 2003, Thompson worked on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, reporting on foreign affairs, defence and immigration issues.[6][7]

From 1996-2003, Thompson covered the Rwandan Genocide for the Toronto Star[8]. In January 2004, Thompson travelled to Tanzania, to report on Lieutenant-General Roméo Dallaire’s testimony before the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

Thompson wrote a regular column called World Citizen that appeared in the Toronto Star every second Saturday.

Journalist Awards[edit]

In April 2010, Governor-General Michaëlle Jean presented Thompson with the Governor General’s Medal during her State Visit to Rwanda. The Medal recognition of Thompson's work establishing the Rwanda Initiative and promoting freedom of the press in Rwanda.[9]

To also recognize his work in trying to foster a free press Rwanda, Thompson was presented with the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in November 2012.[10][11]

Professor[edit]

In 2003, Thompson joined the faculty of Carleton University (his alma mater) as an associate professor where he taught in the school of Journalism and Communication.

Politics[edit]

On July 13, 2014, Thompson announced via YouTube video [12] that he was seeking the Liberal Party of Canada nomination for the riding of Huron-Bruce.

He won the riding association's nomination and became the Liberal candidate for Huron Bruce[13] in the 2015 Federal Election. Thompson finished second to incumbent Conservative MP Ben Lobb.

Project Rural[edit]

In January 2017, Thompson was asked to set up and lead a “Project Rural” task force in Ontario. Project Rural will better inform the Liberal Party of Canada about the issues of importance to rural Ontarians so the party can begin to create a rural campaign strategy and platform ideas for the 2019 federal election.[14] [15]
