Almost Hero

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Almost Hero is a side-scrolling beat 'em up video game for the NES. The game was released by Mega Cat Studios, a Pittsburgh-based company that makes retro cartridges and PC games, in 2017.[1]

Plot[edit]

The city of Omisai, famous for its bonsai tree businesses, is under attack by an evil ninja overlord and his army of thugs.[2] Only a janitor-turned ninja hopeful can save the city, and his master's bonsai business, from these evil forces[3]

Development[edit]

Almost Hero was released as a physical NES cartridge, and thus was developed to function within the constraints of that system.[4] As a homage to classic beat 'em ups, the game features elements from many retro titles.[5]

Gameplay[edit]

The game features the protagonist's dojo as a hub, from which he can explore the game's levels in any order. At the dojo, players can purchase healing items and upgrades, such as Foot Passion VHS tapes.[6] Almost Hero offers couch co-op support.[7] There is no save or password system. A variety of weapons can be found within each level, such as boomboxes, Furbies, and blue turtle shells.[8] Each level is ruled by a boss which resembles a classic cartoon or video game character.[9] The game also uses bonsai seeds as a collectible currency, which the player can use to buy upgrades.[10]
