Alternative Education Resource Organization
The Alternative Education Resource Organization (AERO) is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 by Jerry Mintz to advance learner-centred approaches to education.[1] AERO has over 500 member schools and organizations as well as many individual members. The group's website includes a map of schools and learning centers using all sorts of alternative education models.[2] They host an annual conference for educators, students, parents, and other interested parties. The AERO Conference has keynoted speakers including Deborah Meier, Sugata Mitra, and Yaacov Hecht.[3]
AERO also has an online bookstore which exclusively distributes a range of alternative education books and DVDs.[4] It has online courses and other resources for people starting new educational alternatives. They publish a magazine, Education Revolution Magazine, both in print and online.
In the research project concerning alternative education, there are research findings relating to the SLO assessment tool for assisting teachers with instructing their students especially for the student population who is impoverished, who has been suspended from traditional schools, who are black or Hispanic, and students with behavioral or learning issues. During the research project the pros and cons of alternative education is mentioned. The benefits of the alternative education is no child is left behind and the negative side of alternative education providing schools is that they do not have the same opportunities for physical education as do the traditional schools have. In alternative schools teachers may have to use more effort to teach students, because students do not share the same perspective of improving themselves and are used to falling behind academically as oppose to those students who have are academically successful in traditional schools.
