Aman Pratap Adhikary (Nepali: अमन प्रताप अधिकारी) (born December 22, 1973), is a Nepalese television reality show director and producer, a film director, an adventurer and a former national level football player.[3] Adhikary is most popular for directing renowned franchise reality shows in Nepal, Himalaya Roadies – Franchise of MTV Roadies of Viacom 18, MTV India [4] and KBC - Ko Bancha Crorepati - the Nepalese version of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’- licensed by Sony Pictures Television. Born in Nepal's capital Kathmandu, Adhikary did his schooling at St. Xaviers School in Kathmandu. Adhikary pursued his higher studies in Birendra Sainik and holds a master's degree in sociology from Tribhuvan University. Adhikary also holds a higher National Diploma in Filmmaking & Television Production studies from Edinburgh College, Scotland. He is best known among his fanbase as Don Director, a name he garnered while filming the reality show Himalaya Roadies.[5] He is the current Station Manager and Director at Prime Times HD Television.

Personal life[edit]

Adhikary is the youngest son of renowned Nepali poet, writer and lyricst Kshetra Pratap Adhikary and Shanta Mahat Adhikary. He was born Kathmandu, Nepal and grew up with his artistic family in the capital. He is the younger brother of renowned 90's Nepalese National Team Goalkeeper Ajar Adhikary. He has two children – Akshyata Adhikary, a daughter. and Abiral Pratap Adhikary, a son.

Education[edit]

He completed his primary education from St. Xavier's School (1980-1990) and high school from Birendra Sainik Mahavidyalaya (1991-1992). He completed his under graduate studies in Humanities from Ramjas College of Delhi University under a special sports scholarship from 1993 to 1995. Later he completed his master's degree in sociology in 1998 from Tribhuvan University. He also pursued diploma in filmmaking & television production from Edinburgh College Scotland.

Career[edit]

Nepal television (1998–2002)[edit]

Sports enthusiast Adhikary began his TV career in 1998, at the young age of 23 when he joined the state-owned Nepal Television as a script writer and assistant producer for the 1998 World Cup special show. Adhikary began producing and hosting weekly sports program called Khel Khel later same year. He hosted and produced Khel Khel between May 1998 to October 2002.

Kantipur television (2003–2005)[edit]

Between 2003 and 2005, Adhikary produced and presented the very popular sports program Scoreboard. The show was a hit among sports enthusiasts and youths of the country. He was also the special correspondent for the 9th SAF Games held in Islamabad in 2004.

Terai television (2010–2015)[edit]

After returning from Scotland, with a higher national diploma in Filmmaking and Television studies, Adhikary joined Terai Television as the then management was looking to expand the audience range that was primarily limited to the audience in Terai region of Nepal. Adhikary was Producer and Presenter for a special in-depth analysis program on the ongoing World Cup 2010. Between 2011 and 2013 Adhikary also produced and presented weekly adventure reality show Venturing Nepal and weekly sports show Champions. He also directed the well acclaimed musical show Kripa Unplugged, the first season (2013) of which aired from TTV while the second (2014) from Kantipur Television. Adhikary served as the Executive Producer for the channel between June 2011 to March 2015.

Himalaya Television (2016–2019)[edit]

Adhikary joined Himalaya Television as Executive Producer in September 2015. He also hosted a sports TV show Name of the game Football.

Prime HD TV (2021)[edit]

Adhikary is currently involved with Prime HD Television as the station director since July 2021.

Himalaya Roadies[edit]

He directed the widely popular TV reality game show Himalaya Roadies an international franchise show of MTV Roadies hosted by Raymond Das Shrestha, with four gang leaders namely, Anoop Bikram Shahi, Saman Shrestha, Deeya Maskey and Ashish Rana aka Laurey. Between 2017 and 2019, Adhikary directed three seasons of the show.[6][7]

Ko Bancha Crorepati[edit]

Adhikary directed Ko Bancha Crorepati a franchise show of Who Wants to be a Millionaire? in Nepal. The reality show was hosted by Rajesh Hamal and aired from AP1 TV in 2019.

Aaina[edit]

Adhikary also directed the much-acclaimed social reality show Ainaa hosted by politician Bishwa Prakash Sharma. The show explored untold stories of Nepalese societies and touched on emerging social issues. Ainaa was aired from Kantipur Television between 2020 – 2021.

Documentaries[edit]

Adhikary directed the critically acclaimed In God’s Pond, a documentary about the popular and widely criticized ‘Dey Pukhu Jatra’of khokana region in Lalitpur district of Nepal. The documentary has been banned for public viewing by locals of the region due to the nature of the festival. Adhikary has also directed the heartwarming documentary called A day in the life of a moustache man that was showcased at the 2009 Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival KIMFF, Filmhouse screening of Nepali documentaries, 2009 in Edinburgh, UK and at the event An evening with filmmaker Aman Adhikary organized by Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh. One of the other notable documentaries made by the director include …And this is my life… story of a deaf girl that screened at the Filmhouse screening of Nepali documentaries, 2009 in Edinburgh, UK. Adhikary is well known in documenting tourism stories as well. He has made several documentaries with SNV and TAAN including Taplejung- Destination Lumbasumba, Gorkha- Lower Manaslu Trekking Trail and Dolpa- Exploring Upper Dolpa. Adhikary’s documentary Torch Expedition at Mt. Ama Dablam had a special screening at the Nepal Tourism Board in 2011 during the felicitation of mountaineers.

Sports career[edit]

Adhikary played professional football between 1991 and 2001 when he joined the renowned ‘A’ division football club Friends Club at the early age of 16. Adhikary was a striker and participated in Nations Top League Shahid Smarak League and other National Level Tournaments. He continues to play in various charitable and corporate football tournaments.[8][9]

Commentator[edit]

Adhikary was also one of the early sports commentators of Nepal, having begun his commentating career from the 1999 SAF Games. His football commentary in 1999 SAF Games is considered to be the benchmark for the newer generation. He frequently commentated on various sporting events aired through Nepal Television between 1998 and 2002.
