Amazing Cultivation Simulator (了不起的修仙模拟器) is a Chinese indie Wuxia top-down construction and management simulation video game developed by GSQ Games and published by Gamera Game.[1] It was initially released to early access in Chinese in 2019[2], was fully released in November 25, 2020[3] and was later localised and released for English speaking consumers in Q4 2021.[4] Being of Xianxia genre, it involves running a Taoist sect and demonstrates Buddhist and Taoist philosophy. Gameplay wise, it draws heavily from the likes of Rimworld and Dwarf Fortress.[5] Originally only available in Chinese in early access, its systems have been described as very complex and in-depth.[6]
The game was released on Steam early access on January 11th 2019, with a full release on November 25th 2020. It incorporates many elements from Chinese mythology, including Wuxia & Xianxia genres, Taoist religious philosophy and Feng shui.[7][1] The goal of the game is to cultivate disciples' Qi in order to defeat legendary creatures and uncover the mysteries. As of May 28 2023 has a Very Positive review score on Steam.[8]
Setting and Scenarios
The game is set in the fictional Tiancang era. The player's is tasked with rebuilding the "Taiyi sect" after it was attacked, resulting in its master and most of the disciples being lost.[1] The game has tutorial that the player must play the through the prologue stage of in order to unlock the main game. If the player chooses to play through the rest of the tutorials, they will be introduced to a variety of basic mechanics.
The main game that the English localization calls "Classic" is a free play mode where the player can adjust a variety of options to change the difficulty of the game. There is also a creative mode where the player can freely build without the survival mechanics.
Plot
In Amazing Cultivation Simulator, the player takes on the role of the surviving member(s) of the recently destroyed Taiyi sect, attempting to rebuild while taking revenge on its mysterious assailants.[9] Depending on the players actions, they may discover clues about and eventually solve the mystery of their late sect's fate.
Gameplay
The game consists primarily of managing a sect, comparable to a colony in "colony management" video games. The game has a top down, two-dimensional view. Gameplay mechanics include 'cultivating' the sect's disciples, eventually ascending to immortality, balancing Feng shui of rooms and cultivators[9], trading, spreading your influence across the map, fending off invading hostile forces and subjugating powerful monsters.
The game has two save-modes. In addition to normal, "Immortal" acts as Amazing Cultivation Simulator's "hardcore" mode, disabling manual saving and many useful in-game indicators.
Characters
The player starts the game with a few characters that can be either Human or a Yaoguai. There a variety of background that affects each characters starting attributes such as Charisma or Intelligence. These will affect the characters skills like Construction or Farming. At the start of the game these will be your "Outer Disciples" who will do menial jobs whilst training their "Foundation" which is the start of the cultivation process.
The player may guide their characters in cultivation, providing them with optimal environment and materials in order for them to progress further. The characters's are subject to a mood system, affected by various needs and experiences, that affects their mentality in a "Mental" meter and may result in them being unwilling or unable to perform tasks. Character needs include sustenance, rest and recreation.
Laws
When a character has fully filled their Foundation progress they can be promoted to an "Inner Disicple". To do this they have to choose a Law that will dictate their Cultivation path. Each Law has a different set of abilites. There are currently 12 Laws, plus 1 from the Immortal Tales of WuDang DLC. These can be broken into three categories based on Cultivation method. Xiandao is the most common type and focuses on learning from different manuals to be written and used to progress the disciples cultivation. Each Xiandao Law has an associated element from the Five Elements. Shendao is also known as Divine cultivation and focuses on worshiping the disciple to amass belief that is used to progress their cultivation. Physical Cultivation doesn't grant access to miracles, alchemy or artifact crafting like the other two methods but does grant the ability for the disciples to remold parts of their body that bestow powerful effects on their body parts.
Feng Shui
There are 5 elements in the game, Water, Wood, Fire, Earth and Metal. depending on the materials used in construction of a room and the furniture of the room these will positively or negatively effect the Feng Shui of the room. Having good feng shui is important as it can effect the mood bonus and cultivation progress of your disciples. Having bad feng shui in a room can negatively effect a disciples mood and can even lead to their death if not dealt with soon.
World Map
As the players sect starts to grow larger they will gain access to the world map where they can travel to other location on either an "adventure", which is used to go to a location and return with some resources, or "Camp" where the disciple sent to a location will stay at that location allowing the player to control the disciple at that location.
The player will also have events happen to them such as a merchant visiting where they can trade for various resources or there can be raids with enemies coming to attack the sect.
Events
In-game events can be either randomly generated or scripted to trigger based on, both in-game and computer, date and actions taken. Participating and, crucially, succeeding in them provides the player's sect with valuable resources, items and cultivation methods. Events include natural disasters.[10]
Story progression
The story progresses through the player exploring the map, visiting other sects and getting to know their members and, more importantly, their secrets through a social minigame. Collecting all the clues and solving the mystery is necessary for unlocking the intended "good" and complete game ending.
Combat
The player may find themself in various combat situations through, for example, another sect's forces invading the player sect or an ancient beast awakening from their slumber. Tools for repelling and defeating enemies include traditional weaponry, the superhuman powers of mystical and martial arts, spirit animals and defensive 'arrays'. The game's 'randomly generated' invading forces' strength is dependent on the player sect's 'reputation', used in the game as perceived power level, amongst the other sects, the managing of which is a crucial part of early and mid phases of the game, considering that a mismatch of 'reputation' and sect members' actual cultivation progress may result in player sect annihilation.
Modifications
Players of the Steam published edition are able to install modifications (known as "mods") either through the Steam Workshop or directly from the game's built-in mod management feature, that acts as a middle man between the user and the workshop. Players of the GOG.com published Digital_rights_management-free version can also install mods but must procure and install them manually. The game has an active modding commuity, the majority of which are in Chinese.[11]
Reception
