Hazmat Hijinks is a top-down tile-based puzzle adventure game published by National Spork LLC. The game was designed and programmed by Tod Powers.[1]

The environmental[2] theme of the game was inspired when the developer and his nephew went trick or treating as hazmat workers one Halloween.[1]

Hazmat Hijinks was influenced by the PC game Chip's Challenge[3] as well as Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World.[1] The game's core mechanism is the use of hazmat suits and tools to solve challenging puzzles and discover secrets.[4]

Gameplay[edit]

The premise of the game is that the evil Cleaners gang kidnapped Hanford's pet fox because Hanford discovered the Cleaners' illegal toxic waste dumping scheme.[5]

Hanford, who is named for the Hanford superfund site,[5] must collect blue barrels of toxic waste in each level as he overcomes hazards such as radiation, chemicals, and fire, and enemies such as viruses, bacteria, and the Cleaners. The game's 96 levels are an homage to Super Mario World.[6]

Music[edit]

The Hazmat Hijinks soundtrack consists of retro analog synthesized versions of music by Robert Fuchs, Bedřich Smetana, Felix Mendelssohn, Scott Joplin, Charles Leslie Johnson, Richard Strauss, and Johann Strauss II.
