The American Party of Labor or APL is a Marxist-Leninist and Anti-Revisionist Communist Party in the United States. It was founded in 2008 by former comrades of Jack Shulman[1][2]. It has observer status in the ICMLPO which it received in November of 2018[1][3][4]. Its main organs are its newspaper The Red Phoenix[5] as well as its theoretical journal Marxist-Leninist Currents[6]

Program and Platform[edit]

Economic and social[edit]

Domestic policy[edit]

Foreign policy[edit]

The party is seen as controversial because its Program states that the party is "based on Marxism-Leninism, the theoretical writings of Karl Marx, Friedrich Engels, Vladimir Lenin, and Joseph Stalin; defended by Enver Hoxha, and enriched by the experience of figures such as Che Guevara and Ho Chi Minh."[8]

The APL's published stance on supporting gun control has garnered some criticism on the Left.[9][10]

Publications[edit]

The Red Phoenix, the "mass voice" of the APL, is a newspaper published online daily and printed bimonthly[11]. Its first issue was published in November 2017[12].

According to its about page, The Red Phoenix is "dedicated to providing a creative and original insight on what is happening in the United States of America and around the world. Along with analysis of important news, events, reviews, and commentary, the paper also includes interviews and letters from workers across the country. The goal of the Red Phoenix is to provide a platform for working people of all kinds, without the biases and mitigation of corporate media."[11]

Its articles have been republished and translated by the organs of many party members of the ICMLPO.

Its current theoretical journal is Marxist-Leninist Currents and it is published.[6]

From 2010 to 2012, the APL published a theoretical journal called Revolutionary Spirit.[13]

Activities[edit]

The APL has been involved with many protests and organizations.

  • March on the RNC[14] and march on the DNC[15]
  • Supporting anti-war coalitions such as the "Hands Off Venezuela - N.J." coalition, which calls for an end to the risk of U.S. intervention in Venezuela[16]
  • Student Pro Palestinian protests[17]
  • Signing the 2016 U.S. Hands Off Syria Coalition unity statement[18]
  • Supporting the 2019 March on Wall Street.[19]
  • Maintaining community solidarity projects such as Red Aid[20], through which the party provides the impoverished with food, clothing, and other forms of social assistance.[21]
