The American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science - Missouri or (ASCLS-MO) is an American non-profit organization classified as a 501(c)(6). Based in Missouri since its inception in 1949, the organization's mission is "to make a positive impact in health care through leadership that will assure excellence in the practice of laboratory medicine."

This professional organization is dedicated to providing advocacy, standards setting, professional and continuing education, and personal and professional development for clinical laboratory science practitioners.

ASCLS-MO is a constituent society of the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science (ASCLS). This organization is also one of the five (5) states that comprise the ASCLS Region V I[1]; with the other four states being Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska.

History[edit]

This organization was established in 1949[2], and was originally named the Missouri Society for Medical Technologists (MSMT).

  • In 1974, the organization was renamed to the Missouri Society for Medical Technology (MSMT).
  • In 1994, the organization was renamed to the Missouri Organization for Clinical Laboratory Science (MoCLS).
  • In 2014, the organization was renamed to the American Society for Clinical Laboratory Science-Missouri (ASCLS-MO).

Established in 1949[2] as the Missouri Society for Medical Technologists (MSMT), and later named MoCLS for the Missouri Clinical Laboratory Science Professional Society, ASCLS-MO has been serving the interests of and providing education to lab professionals for nearly 70 years.

ASCLS-MO's leadership[3] consists of the Board of Directors (President, President-Elect, Past President, Treasurer, Secretary, Executive Secretary, First and Second-Year Board Directors, Student Director, and the First-Year Professional Director), District Representatives, and the various committee chairpersons.

For the purposes of communicating and distributing information, Missouri is divided into five (5) districts: St. Louis, Cape Girardeau/Poplar Bluff, Kansas City, Springfield/Joplin, and Columbia/Jefferson City.

ASCLS-MO has gone through several changes throughout their existence, however one thing remains constant: their focus on maintaining excellence in the Clinical Laboratory profession[4] by offering continuing education, networking, leadership opportunities, and providing a podium for clinical laboratory science practitioners voice's to be heard.

Mission[edit]

The mission of ASCLS nationally[5] and for ASCLS-MO is to make a positive impact in health care through leadership that will assure excellence in the practice of laboratory medicine.

Core Values[edit]

The core values that the ASCLS national society holds[5] are wholly adopted by ASCLS-MO. These core values include:

  1. Defining the characteristics of competent personnel within the profession and providing professional development opportunities so that practitioners can maintain competency are essential roles of a professional association.
  2. Enabling laboratory professionals to function at their highest level of competence will contribute to cost effective health care.
  3. Promoting diversity supports the delivery of quality laboratory service.
  4. Taking a leadership role in standard and policy setting is a core professional responsibility.
  5. Advocating for quality within the laboratory is essential to the assurance of quality health care delivery.

Core Beliefs[edit]

The core beliefs of the ASCLS-MO society include:

  • Quality laboratory service is essential to quality health care.
  • Everyone deserves access to safe, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered healthcare, and
  • Advancing the laboratory profession advances health care.

Membership[edit]

ASCLS-MO is based in the State of Missouri, within the United States, and has roughly 200 members[6] throughout the state. In 1964, the organization had a larger membership of 325[7]. It is one of the largest clinical laboratory science professional organizations within the State of Missouri.

There are different membership levels offered[8]. For the professional membership, it is open to all persons certified or engaged in the practice and/or education process of clinical laboratory science. There are discounted rates available to students[9][10], developing professionals, and emeritus faculty.[11] Members remit dues[12] to support the activities of ASCLS-MO. Scholarships are also available for students and professionals that may need them[13].

Past Presidents[edit]

Resulting from the names changes to the organization, there are two different tracking categories used for the past presidents.[14]

After the legal name change, the organization had a roster of new presidents.

Conferences[edit]

ASCLS-MO hosts a larger-format conference on a biannual basis[15], with the most recent being in 2019[16][17][18][19][20][21] and the previous one in 2017[22][23], that is rotated throughout different locations within Missouri. One the alternating biannual periods, ASCL-MO will partner with other organizations such as the Clinical Laboratory Management Association (CLMA) to hold larger-scale and multi-day events[24][25][26]. ASCLS-MO will also partner periodically with the Kansas Society for Clinical Laboratory Science for educational events and conferences[27].

Tom Reddig Missouri Scholarship Fund[edit]

One of the long-time directors of the ASCLS-MO organization was Tom Reddig[28]. Shortly after his passing in 2012[29], a scholarship fund was established in his name. The Tom Reddig Missouri Scholarship Fund (TRMSF)[30] has been providing financial assistance to students and professionals to help them in furthering their education, attending conferences and events, and to assist them in performing research within laboratory science.
