Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Inter-Medical School Physiology Quiz or IMS PQ is a medical physiology quiz competition among medical students from universities around the world. IMSPQ was initiated in the year 2003 and the challenge trophy for the IMSPQ was named after the late Professor A. Raman who was the first Malaysian professor of physiology at the University of Malaya.[1] It is confirmed that the 11th IMSPQ will be held on 28 & 29 August 2013.[2] Accordingly, the date aims to allow the teams who are interested to watch Malaysia's National Day parade which is on 31 August 2013.

Participants[edit]

The event gathered students from countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Philippines, China, Taiwan, Japan, Australia, Romania, Poland, etc.

Over the years, the IMSPQ received great response from medical schools around the world. From seven teams in year 2003, the quiz has expanded to hosting 85 teams in year 2013.

Some frequent participating universities include Chulalongkorn University, National University of Singapore, Second Military Medical University, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, University of New South Wales, Guangxi Medical University, Mahidol University, University Gadjah Mada, University Brunei Darulssalam, National Chengkung University Taiwan etc.

Local Malaysian universities include University of Malaya, University of Science Malaysia, UNIMAS, National University of Malaysia, International Islamic University Malaysia etc. and some other private universities in Malaysia including Monash University, International Medical University, University College Sedaya International etc.

Beginning of 11th IMSPQ (2013), registration fees of USD 30 per participant will be charged.[2]

Mechanism of competition[edit]

Initially, the IMSPQ was a one-day event. However, due to the sudden leap in the number of participating universities in the 6th IMSPQ, the IMSPQ had evolved into a two-day event.[3] Since then, the competition which consists of two parts (the written quiz and the oral quiz) are held on two different days.

In the written quiz session (the 1st day), a set of multiple-choice question (consisting of 100 questions) will be given. The questions designed aims to maximally examine students' understanding on the concepts of different human body systems. In order to prevent blind attempts, negative marking system is employed.[4] One mark will be given for each correct question and one mark will be deducted for a wrong attempt.

Since different universities are sending different number of participants (ranging from 3 to 5 students), average marks are used for the determination of the ranking for each university.

In the oral quiz session (the 2nd day), different teams are placed into groups through sortition. Depending on the number of teams during that year, the number of teams in each group will be different. For example, in IMSPQ 2012, the top 40 teams are sorted into 8 groups (each group consists of 5 teams).

Each team sends three representatives to the stage. Generally, the quiz master asks one question to each representative. For a correct answer, the team receives three points and no point is deducted for a wrong answer/unanswered question. If, within 15 seconds, the participant is unable to provide answer or the answer is wrong, the question is open to the rest of the participants in that group. For such open question, a correct answer will be given two points while a wrong answer will be penalized with one point. At the end, one team with the highest point will proceed to the next round.

Due to the different numbers of teams in the oral quiz session, the mechanism of the oral quiz session will be adapted slightly each year.

Cultural night[edit]

The cultural night is organized during the first night of the competition. Participants from different countries volunteer to give performance such as reciting poem, singing, sketch, playing instrument, dancing etc. which showcase the cultures back in their countries. Also, during the night, announcement regarding the written test results will be made intermittently. Usually, only the teams that enter to the oral quiz session in the next day is announced. For example, IMSPQ 2012 announced 40 teams (universities) that obtained the highest marks in the written quiz session and these 40 teams were divided into different blocks during the cultural night. The next day, the oral quiz session will go according to the blocks that have been determined.
