Amit Palekar, (born 1976) is an Indian lawyer, social worker and politician from Goa state. He is the president of the Goa unit of Aam Aadmi Party and was the chief ministerial candidate of Goa in the 2022 Goa Legislative Assembly election. Palekar has been associated with various social causes and has been vocal against corruption in the state of Goa. He was also active during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic and donated 135 beds to a hospital.[1][2]

Career

He is a fluent speaker of Konkani, Marathi, English and Hindi languages.[3]

As an advocate he had represented Goa minister Pacheco in 2010.[4]

He is from the Bhandari community of Goa. According to the 2014 survey by the Goa State commission for backward classes, Bhandari community constitutes 27% of the total population of Goa.[5]

In 2021, he worked to arrange oxygen cylinders for COVID-19 patients. His efforts at the peak of the pandemic were highlighted in the newspapers. He had also petitioned the Goa High Court to direct the Goa state government and ensure that adequate medical oxygen is available for the patients.[3]

He joined the Aam Aadmi Party in October 2021. He held several press conferences to highlight corruption in the government employment in Goa.[3]

In December 2021 he organised indefinite fast against the construction of a bungalow in an "unauthorised" manner at Old Goa heritage precinct. His team also took steps to pursue the case in the court.[6] On third day of the fast, due to his deteriorating health, the doctors advised him to end the fast. He continued fasting for five days after which the Goa government announced action against the controversial building. He ended his five-day fast after the announcement.[7] The Goa government ordered the demolition of the structure.[8] Herald Goa reported that his signature campaign received support from more than 30,000 people in Goa.[9][10] Palekar credited the success of the agitation to the support by the local people.[8]

In January 2022, he was declared the chief ministerial candidate of Goa by the Aam Aadmi Party in the 2022 Goa Legislative Assembly election.[11][12][13]

In May 2022, he was appointed the President of AAP Goa.[14][15]

AAP Goa President

In July 2022, reacting to the news of some Congress MLAs ready to join BJP, he said, "Due to BJP's national failure, they are going state by state in preparation for elections in 2024 so that they can manipulate elections. This has been seen in Maharashtra and now is being seen in Goa"[16]

He called on OBCs to boycott panchayat polls in Goa as the government had failed to keep seats reserved for the OBCs.[17][18][19][20]

In 2022, a car fell off the Zuari Bridge killing all 4 occupants. Demands for the audit of the bridge safety was made by the local politicians. Palekar blamed the depression near the gap between the bridge spans near the site of the accident as the cause. He demanded the bridge to be repaired.[21][22]

[23]

On 2 October 2022, he criticized the water tarrif hike by the BJP led state government.[24][25]

Family

His mother Jyoti Palekar was the longest-serving head of the village council (Sarpanch) of the Merces village panchayat.[3]
