Amnesia: Rebirth is an upcoming survival horror video game being developed and published by Frictional Games. The game will be the third official entry in the Amnesia series, following Amnesia: The Dark Descent in 2010 and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs in 2013. The game was announced by Frictional Games on March 6th 2020 and is set for a release in Autumn 2020.[1]. The game will be released for Microsoft Windows and PlayStation 4[1]
Sypnosis[edit]
Taking place in the same universe as the previous instalments, Amnesia: Rebirth will follow the story of Tasi Trianon who wakes up in the deserts of Algeria, disorientated and separated from her companions. Tasi must journey deep into the deserts and piece together what led her to this point and where her companions are, all the while evading mysterious entities which constantly pursue her. According to PCGamer, the game takes place in 1937, almost a centry after the events of The Dark Descent.[2].
Much like the previous games, it will be played from a first-person perspective. The game will feature puzzle elements and place emphasis on resource management, requiring players to manage their items carefully[3]
Development[edit]
Frictional Games revealed Amnesia: Rebirth on 6th March 2020.[1]. In an interview with PCGamer, creative director Thomas Grip said that the studio was taking notes from its previous titles such as The Dark Descent, but especially from SOMA, a survival horror game released by Frictional Games in 2015[4]. Grip stated that the studio wanted to 'have another shot' at creating the Amnesia experience they wanted to make with The Dark Descent, whose reputation is now very much associated with Let's Play videos. They felt like the themes they wanted to explore with The Dark Descent were overlooked due to the game's notoriety with Let's Players, so with Rebirth the studio decided to take a different approach to how the player would experience the game[4]
In an earlier interview with PCGamer, Grip and other members of the team stated that the game would take a much more restrained approach to jumpscares, preferring instead to build a more slow-burning and looming horror which gets more pressuring as the player progresses through the game. Creative Lead Fredrick Ollson teased that there will be consequences for the player long-term if they are caught by the monsters or fail to complete an objective, but not much more on this game mechanic has been teased so far. The way the game plays will also feel similar to that of SOMA, having a heavy emphasis on the narrative and its themes driving the game forward.[2]
