Amr ibn Qaraza (Arabic: عَمرو بن قَرَظَة) was one of the martyrs of the Battle of Karbala.
Lineage[edit]
His father, Qaraza ibn Ka'b was a transmitter of hadiths. As a companion of the Prophet, Qaraza ibn Ka'b fought in the Battle of Uhud and other subsequent battles.[1] During the rule of Ali ibn Ani Talib, he was appointed as the governor of Kufa. He also fought on the side of Ali in several battles.[2]
In the Battle of Karbala[edit]
Before the day of Ashura, Hussain asked Amr ibn Qaraza to deliver a message to Umar ibn Sa'd to meet each other at night.[3]
Reports state that Amr stood in front of Hussain as a shield from oncoming arrows. Before dying, he asked Hussain, "Did I fulfill my promise?"
He answered: "Yes, you are in front of me in the paradise. Send my greetings to the Prophet."
In Ziyarah al-Shuhada', he is mentioned by name, when it says: "peace be upon Amr ibn Qaraza al-Ansari"[4]
