Biography[edit]

DeGise was born and raised in Jersey City, where her father is active in local politics; in addition, her aunt, Lois Shaw, is a former member of the Jersey City Council[citation needed]. She graduated from Montclair State University with a bachelor's degree in education, and went to work as a teacher in New Jersey public schools while also gaining her master's degree in educational technology[1].

In 2017, DeGise was appointed to a vacant seat on the Jersey City School Board, and she won election to a full term in November of that year. While on the board, she became the first woman to chair the Hudson County Democratic Party organization. In November of 2021, she was elected to the Jersey City Council[2].

Hit-and-run[edit]

In July of 2022, DeGise was caught on video hitting a bicyclist with her car and then driving away without checking on him or notifying emergency services[citation needed]. Subsequent media attention revealed that DeGise has previously attempted to utilize her family and political connections to avoid having her car impounded for illegal parking in a separate incident. The case has inspired widespread condemnation, with thousands of residents calling on DeGise to resign[citation needed]. As of August 2022, she has refused to do so.
