Anand Vyas is an American artist, writer, painter, photographer, cinematographer[1], and musicologist. He is Ustad Sultan Khan's (Sarangi master) only disciple who plays and has mastered the sitar[2]. He is the resident artist at the Goat Farm Arts Center Atlanta, Georgia.
Early life
Anand Vyas was born in Queens, New York in 1976. His father immigrated to the United States in the 60’s. While his father was a Ph.D in Criminal Justice, his mother was a homemaker. Anand learned to play the sitar from recordings of the maestros. Once Ustad Sultan Khan came to Atlanta for a concert with Ustad Zakir Hussain. This was when Ustad Sultan Khan was attracted to the sound played by Anand. After the concert was over, a well-known concert organizer and brother of Ikram Khan named H. Kalavant took his friend (Ustad Sultan Khan) to go hear the 18-year old Anand.
As they arrived, Ustad Sultan Khan asked to hear some of Anand’s sitar playing. Khan asked Vyas who his teachers were and he replied many including yourself, sir. Impressed by Anand, Ustad Sultan Khan asked him to become his disciple. In the same year, Vyas flew to India from America and did his Ganda Bandhan at Poonam Palace Hotel. The ceremony was attended by Fazal Qureshi, Kishan Maharaj, Ikram Khan, Hidayat Khan, Nandan Mehta, Sultan Khan and his family.
