Anchorage is a digital asset custodian for institutional investors, based in San Francisco, California. Anchorage uses modern security engineering to help institutional investors safeguard their investments.[1][2]The company was founded in 2017 by Diogo Monica and Nathan McCauley.

Overview[edit]

Anchorage serves institutional investors, including such clients as Blockchain Capital, Polychain, Paradigm, and a16z crypto.  Anchorage is a Qualified Custodian, having established a subsidiary called Anchorage Trust Company based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Anchorage Trust Company is a South Dakota state-chartered trust company with fiduciary powers.

Anchorage is a Founding Member of the Libra Association. Libra is a not-yet-launched digital currency, and other Founding Members of the Libra Association include Visa, Mastercard, Stripe, PayPal, eBay, Lyft, Uber, Spotify, and Facebook. The core responsibility of Anchorage being a Founding Member of the Libra Association is to maintain a validator node and assist in the governance and operations of Libra.[3][4][5]

Technology[edit]

Anchorage offers a “smart storage” solution, as an alternative to solutions that utilize hot wallets and cold storage. Anchorage’s solution utilizes multiple layers of biometric authentication, as well as HSMs (hardware security modules) modified with custom logic.

This solution enables clients to use their asset-holding private keys for transactions, audits, staking, voting, and other online operations without being removed from safe storage.[3][4][6][7][8][9][5][10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18]

Funding[edit]

Anchorage raised $17M in a Series A round in Jan 23, 2019. This firm’s investors include Blockchain Capital, Visa, Andreessen Horowitz, Khosla Ventures, #Angels, SciFi VC, Polychain, and SV Angel. In July 2019, Anchorage raised $40M in a Series B funding round led by Blockchain Capital with participation from Visa. To date, the total funding is $57M over 2 rounds.[1][2][19][20][21][22][23]
