André Savetier (/ɑnˈdreː sav.tje/) is an Austrian anthropologist of popular music and popular culture, blogger, film-maker and songwriter.
Centre of Savetier's work is his homepage 'Echo of the Heyday of New Wave[1]' – established in 2011 – where articles on music and popular culture, interviews, and album reviews are found among others. His specialisation in music are "contemporary new wave music phenomena".[2]
According to his account Savetier speaks several eastern European languages[2] and often writes about underground music and music events in east-central Europe, most notably about Polish coldwave.[3]
Music Anthropology[edit]
André Savetier's has an anthropological approach towards music. In an interview with the Italian underground music webzine Flux he described this as follows:[4]
"As music anthropologist I am dealing of course with music, but even more with what is socially and sociologically connected to it – intentions of music making, fandom, subcultures, scenes,... – and with the human beings behind music."
As such Savetier's interview style differs crucially from the established ones in the music scene. Instead of the traditional question/answer routine, Savetier perceives interviews as talks which are not scripted beforehand, thereby giving "the audience a more human insight on how the bands they like are.[4]"
André Savetier gained wider reputation with the documentary film André Savetier's Northern Italian New Wave Journey about the northern Italian post-punk/new wave scene which was produced in summer 2016.[1][5]
Music[edit]
In 2016 André Savetier started to publish and promote his music over the Internet (Bandcamp,[6] Youtube[7]). Since then Savetier's music appears on several compilations.[8][9] Savetier's music is synthesizer-based and heavily influenced by darkwave, minimal wave and synthwave of the 1980s.
On the Polish underground webzine WavePress Savetier's video clip to the song 'The Foreigner' became video of the week March 13–19.[10]
Savetier produced the song 'Anubis / The Imperative of Joy' in collaboration with the notable Greek synth artist Kriistal Ann from Paradox Obscur[11] which also became video of the week (April 17-23) on WavePress[12].
