Club career[edit]

Early career

Hamrun Spartans F.C. (2009 - 2014)

Cassar made his first team debut for his home town club Hamrun Spartans in the Maltese top flight (Maltese Premier League) on the 26th of September 2009 against the champions of that season Birkirkara at the tender age of 16 years. Cassar was the main whistle blower where he was approached in the beginning of 2013 (Season 2012-2013) by 2 committee officials and 2 players of his club to fix 3 matches. He refused and later reported the case to the relevant authorities whereas in December 2014 the 2 players and 2 committee officials where suspended for life from any football activities. In that season (Season 2012-2013) the team was relegated to the Maltese First Division, fined €10,000 and started the next season (Season 2013-2014) with a -7 point deduction.[2] Having still another two years of his contract Cassar had to play in the Maltese First Division (2nd tier of Maltese football). The club was unable to overturn this deficit and at the end of Season 2013-2014 the club was relegated to the Maltese Second Division.

Pembroke Athleta F.C. (2014 - 2015)

After the relegation of his former club to the Maltese Second Division Cassar joined newly promoted Pembroke Athleta on loan in the Maltese First Division. That season Cassar and his team became champions of the Maltese First Division and achieved a historical milestone for the club, since this was the 1st time Pembroke Athleta were promoted to the top tier of Maltese football.

Tarxien Rainbows F.C. (2015–present)

Cassar returned to Premier League football next season (Season 2015-2016) and he joined Tarxien Rainbows. The club achieved 6th place and Cassar that season won the MFPA Best Young Goalkeeper and the MFPA Best Goalkeeper awards of the Maltese Premier League. Despite the team finishing in 6th place he also finished with the most clean sheets in the Maltese Premier League.[3]

Season 2016-2017 was not so good for Cassar as he was injured for the most part although still managed to make 19 appearances including a semi final appearance against Sliema Wanderers which Tarxien Rainbows lost.

In the beginning of Season 2017-2018 Cassar had to undergo two major surgeries in his ankle which ruled him out for the 1st part of the season. Tarxien Rainbows weren't having a good season and only gathered 7 points until January and were lying in the automatic relegation to the Maltese First Division. Cassar returned to action at the end of January and was instrumental in the club's survival hopes including two man of the match performances in the win against Balzan and draw against Hibernians. With him in the pitch the team gathered 16 points enough to make the relegation play-off against Zejtun Corinthians which Tarxien Rainbows won with a score of 1-0 and secured their status in the Maltese Premier League for another season. During the 3 months that he played during this season Cassar also won another 2 individual honours, the best save for March 2018 against Valletta and Best Player for the month of April 2018.[4][5]

Personal life[edit]

Cassar is also a graduate from University of Malta having completed the course of BSc (Hons) in Business and IT.
