Andrew Tower Barnhill (born November 11, 1987) was the 2016 Democratic nominee for North Carolina Senate in the 9th District. He is a member of the Democratic Party and the Main Street Democrats.[1] Barnhill waged one of North Carolina's most expensive Senate contests.[2] He was endorsed by President Barack Obama as one of the few high profile state senate races receiving the support of the White House.[3] He lost to Michael Lee.[4]
Barnhill is a resident of Wilmington and a graduate of New Hanover High School. He attended Furman University on a Herman W. Lay Scholarship where he majored in Political Science and Communication Studies. While at Furman, Barnhill received the President's Volunteer Service Award from President George W. Bush.[5] He attended University of Oxford in 2007.[citation needed]
A graduate of the University of North Carolina and Duke University, Barnhill's first political experience was in the office of U.S. Congressman Mike McIntyre from North Carolina's 7th District.[6] Following his time on Capitol Hill, Barnhill completed a Fellowship with The Eleison Group, a Democratic consulting firm specializing in connecting clients with the religious communities and people of faith across the nation. Barnhill later worked with Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell and Berkowitz in the Federal Public Policy Group.[7]

A centrist Democrat, Barnhill cites his religious views as having an impact on his political positions. During the 2016 campaign, Barnhill was an early opponent of the controversial House Bill 2. He was endorsed by the Southern States Police Benevolent Association.[8]
