Andrew Kwon (born September 23, 1995) is a fashion designer of South Korean-American heritage, based in New York, NY..[1] He established his eponymous label in 2020, located in Manhattan, New York.[2] Kwon released his first collection in the Spring of 2021, specializing in wedding and evening wear dresses. His designs have been presented at events such as New York Fashion Week (NYFW)[3] and Bridal Fashion Week[4].[5][6] Kwon pursued his fashion education at Parsons the New School for Design.[5] Publications including Vogue[7], The New York Times[8] and Forbes[9][4] have featured Kwon's work and achievements.

Early life and education[edit]

Andrew Kwon was born on September 23, 1995, in in Denver, Colorado.  He grew up in various locations across the United States, including Colorado Springs, Colorado, Rancho Palos Verdes, California, Aurora, Colorado, and Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania.[8] He comes from a family of Korean immigrants who are business owners, and he has an older brother.[10]

Kwon attended several art courses during his junior high school and high school years. Kwon was raised in Colorado, where he attended Grandview High School, graduating in 2014. He graduated from the Parsons the New School of Design in 2019 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in fashion design.[11] In 2018, Kwon was awarded the Luxury Education Foundation Scholarship and showcased his work at Neiman Marcus Hudson Yards.[12] In 2019, Kwon represented Parsons in the annual Supima Design Competition[13], competing against students from seven other fashion schools in the US. His collection, Whispering Garden, was presented during both New York Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week.

In 2018, Kwon received the Luxury Education Foundation Scholarship Award.[12]

Subsequently, his thesis collection was showcased at The Shops at Hudson Yard's Neiman Marcus. Nathalie Emmanuel from Game of Thrones, featured Kwon's designs in various publications, such as the Nylon September Cover Story in 2019.[14] Additionally, Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray, wore Kwon's designs for her final photoshoot with the Miss Universe Organization.[15]

While studying at Parsons School of Design, Kwon began his career by working at Nicholas Caito, Vera Wang, and Marchesa. After graduating in 2019, Kwon launched his own brand, Andrew Kwon, in 2020. His first bridal collection, Collection 1- reminiscence[16], was introduced during New York Fashion Week in the Spring of 2021. In the Fall of the same year, he presented his second bridal collection, Collection 2 - dreamer, which was featured in The New York Times[8]. Subsequently, Kwon's work has appeared in several publications such as Harpers Bazaar[17], Brides[18], Women's Wear Daily (WWD)[19], Fashionista[20], and L'Officiel[21]

Music, notably from Andrea Bocelli and his mother, has been cited by Kwon as a significant inspiration for his designs.[22] Singer Loren Allred[11] wore Kwon’s designs during the Andrea Bocelli 2021 Tour.

Andrew Kwon's third collection, Collection 3 - reverie, was launched at New York Fashion Week in September 2022. This represented the first in-person presentation of his brand and his first eveningwear collection. The collection, showcased at The Baccarat Hotel, was influenced by Kwon's childhood memories. Later that year in October, Kwon revealed his fourth collection, Collection 4 - rarefied, at Bridal Fashion Week held at The Peninsula Hotel in NYC. The collection included nine designs using couture techniques and fabrics, inspired by Kwon's personal journey.

During New York Fashion Week in February 2023, Kwon's fifth collection debuted at The Baccarat Hotel, marking his first runway show. The 17-piece collection reflected the characteristics of light and incorporated a range of silhouettes.[23][24]

At the 2023 Independent Spirit Awards, Regina Hall wore a design by Kwon and recounted her experience in Elle magazine.[25] At the premiere of "Shazam! Fury of the Gods", Lucy Liu wore a custom gown by Kwon.[26] Kwon acknowledged Liu's inspirational role in his work. For the 2023 Elton Johns AIDS Foundation Oscars Viewing Party, actress and activist Sophia Bush wore a gown by Kwon, Bush played Brooke Davis on One Tree Hill. During the same year of the 2023 Oscars, actress Olivia DeJonge wore Kwon to the Oscars Vanity Fair Party.

In 2023, Kwon was invited by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) to become an Interim Member.[27][28]

During Bridal Fashion Week in April of 2023, Kwon, in collaboration with Manolo Blahnik, hosted the unveiling of his sixth collection, Collection 6 - epiphany.[29][30]

Kwon also partnered with Moda Operandi, marking his first venture into e-commerce.[31] This partnership entailed a trunk show on Moda Operandi's platform, showcasing a selection of 13 pieces from Kwon's six collections. The collaboration with Moda Operandi allowed for a broader distribution of Kwon's designs.

Personal life[edit]

Kwon's full name is Andrew "Jun O" Kwon. He has expressed his mother as a major source of inspiration. As an Asian American, Kwon participates in dialogues concerning the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community.[11][32][33]
