Animal happiness certification
The animal happiness certification refers in general terms to the process in which it is proven that a producer of food of animal origin, meets with all the requirements and standardizations for the optimal care of these animals, following the policies of animal welfare, in accordance with the practices of bioethics and ecology of sustainable development. This includes providing a minimum space for them to move freely through the soil, in addition to a healthy diet, enough natural light and fresh air.[1] Although there is no "animal happiness certificate" called literally so, it is a type of food certification and labeling, which can be granted by a public or private body competent in areas such as livestock, agriculture and veterinary medicine.
In the beginning, this kind of certifications was aimed mainly for egg poultry producers, mostly hens, known as "happy chickens", who voluntarily guaranteed the birds not stay inside battery cages. However, it was also extended to milk producers and their derivatives (cheese, yogurt, etc.).[2]
In the United States, there are organizations that are dedicated to the certification of farms and labeling of products of animal origin that comply with the regulations of animal care. "Happy Free Hens" of the Humane Farm Animal Care[3] and the American Humane Certified program of the American Humane are two of them.
