Anita Valencia (born 1933)[1] is a sculptor known for her public art and sculptures that are repurposed from different recycled materials, such as aluminum cans[2] and food wrappers.[3] The medium she chooses for her pieces is considered a reflection of her concern over environmental issues.[2]
In 2008, Valencia created “Perinolas” from 2,500 aluminum cans for the Grand Hyatt Hotel Lobby.[3] In 2013, she was commissioned to create an artwork for the San Antonio River Foundation. She created the Butterfly Bench from recycled materials and was inspired by the nature and butterflies by the San Antonio River.[4]
Her piece “Se Fueron los Colondrinas” has also been featured in an art exhibition called “A Woman’s Place Is …” curated by Kathy Vargas, a San Antonio artist.[5] The piece represents small birds which are created from recycled beer cans.[3]
Biography[edit]
Anita Valencia was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas.[4] On Perez Street in San Antonio, her family used to own a grocery store.[3]
She has lived most of her life in her Woodlawn Lake home and has been involved in the San Antonio art community for over forty years.[3]
