Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital
Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital,’’ located in the Central Region of Ghana, provides essential healthcare services to mental patients in the Cape Coast municipality.[1]
History
The Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital was built by Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first President in 1965 to host mentally ill patients. The facility accepts patients from neighboring countries, namely La Cote D’ Ivoire, Burkina Faso, Togo and Benin [2]
Ankaful Psychiatric Hospital was established in 1965 by the first president of Ghana[3] Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.[4] The hospital provides inpatient and outpatient psychiatric services to the general public. The facility was designated as a 500-bed hospital in response to Ghana hosting the Organisation of Africa Unity (O.A.U) conference in May 1965.[4]
The Wesley Girls’ High School past students raised funds and donated mattresses to renovate one of the wards. The renovation was completed in May 2020.[5][6] Hands of God Foundation donated equipment and consumables to the hospital.[7] Pentecost International Worship Center Takoardi donated assorted items to the hospital.[8]
