Antara Nandy is an Indian Playback singer and a social media influencer as well. She is also well known for her balcony concert series with her sister (Ankita Nandy) as "Nandy Sisters", also known for her song "Nisdin[1]" with AR Rahman.[2]

Her debut playback is with the song "Alaikadel[3]" for the mega film PS-1 in Tamil and "Doobi Doobi[4]" in the Hindi version. She has done playback in other languages as well viz Assamese, Telegu & Kannada. She has recorded songs and composed albums in various Indian languages and has established herself as one of the leading upcoming playback singers in India.

Antara started her career after reaching the final rounds and becoming one of the top three girl finalists in the music talent and reality show Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs-2009,[5] which was aired on Zee TV.[6]

She is also the voice of "Mission Paani Anthem[7]" by Prasoon Joshi[8] and AR Rahman[9] and the "Apollo Tyre Song" featuring Sachin Tendulkar and many other projects. Antara Nandy has collaborated with or sung alongside renowned singers like Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Udit Narayan, AR Rehman,[10] and many more. Today, Antara performs LIVE concerts all over the world.

Life and background[edit]

Antara started her schooling at "Budding Buds School[11]" within the Tinsukia district in Assam and completed her schooling at "Delhi Public School, Ruby Park" in Kolkata, West Bengal. Antara completed her graduation from "The Symbiosis Centre of Media & Communication" in Pune and her "Masters in Music" from Pune University.[12]

Antara started her vocal training in Hindustani serious music under Padma Shree Ustaad Rashid Khan at the age of 5 years. Later, she joined ITC Sangeet Research Academy as a Junior Scholar. In 2013, Antara was also trained at KM Music Conservatory[13] by A. R. Rahman[14] and began her western classical music training.

Antara started her public performance at the age of 5 when she performed a classical bandish at the distinguished Durbar Hall, Kolkata. At the age of 9, Antara gave her first major public performance at the Netaji Indoor Stadium in Kolkata. She was also a scholar at the Centre for Cultural Resources and Training[15]—Govt of India (CCRT[16]) from 2012 onwards.

In 2009, Antara was selected for the 'Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L'il Champs 2009', a music reality and talent show conducted by Zee TV, which proved to be the stepping stone in her life. Thereafter She was the recipient of the 'Star Wars Award 2012' conferred by Dream Catchers, Singapore, and therefore the 'Young Achiever Award' in 2014, bestowed on her by the Integrated Council for Socio-Economic Progress,[17] Kolkata. Antara won the "Best Music – Music Video" category within the "Delhi Shorts International Film Festival-15[18]" for her first original composition and music, "YA DEVI[19]". Antara sang in many jingles, including and later for her song "Ja Ud Ja[20]". The Apollo Tyre Jingle featuring Sachin Tendulkar in 2021 and therefore the Paani Song for Harpic are the notable ones.

Antara’s dream of singing together with her God of music, i.e., AR Rahman,[21] came true when she sang an ingenious "Nis Din[22]" on a show on air with AR Rahman[23] and Jonita Gandhi[24] in 2019 and then with Udit Narayan[25] in 2020 on the show "Jammin[26]".

She was nominated for the 'Ramdhenu Viewers Choice Awards[27]' within the Best Female Singer category in 2013.

Her debut album, Ei Jibon Nohoi Xuna Bondhu (this isn't life, my friend) (an Assamese album), was well received by music critics at the time. Then she released her second album in Bengali, 'Eso Matoh Lakkhi Devi' (a Bengali devotional album) with Bollywood playback singer Raghav Chatterjee. It raced up the charts to succeed in the top 4 positions within 3 weeks of its release in Kolkata.

She has sung on many other collaborative albums. She has also been performing everywhere in the country, including some prestigious events like Alive-India together.

In 2013, Antara sang hits like "Police Babu" and "Najanu" for Hangul Theatre. Najanu won the Ramdhenu Viewers' Choice award in 2013. within the same year, she rendered her voice within the Assamese album "Xarodi Puwa", featuring a critically acclaimed semi-classical composition by Dr. Bikram Borkotoki under the banner of Times Music, Mumbai. She had also recorded a variety of theme and title songs for various Bangla TV series which were aired on Star Ananda, ETV Bangla, and other channels.

Apart from albums and TV series, Antara has also sung for films in a few regional languages. She had performed the opening number for the Assamese film KHEL-the Game. In 2017, she recorded for the Bengali film "Kichuta Somoy" and also the hit Assamese song "Bindas".

In 2012, Antara collaborated with Assamese musician Jim Ankan Deka on a campaign against violence toward women supported by the Delhi gang rape (Nirbhaya incident). The duo, together with Assamese singer Queen Hazarika and playback singer Ritwika Bhattacharya, released a music video titled Aawaz-Speak Up Against Sexual Violence, where Antara raised her voice against child sexual assault. The song was produced by Bangalore-based Eastern Fare Music Foundation, and therefore the video was directed by Parmita Borah. The video won several awards at various music and film festivals.
