Dr Antony Theodore (born 1954) is a German poet, educator and activist who writes in both English and German. He writes mostly on teachings of Jesus Christ and underlying unity of all world religions. He consistently appears among top world poets in various poetry websites.[1] He is best known for his anti-abortion poem "I am your Baby, Mother", which has been translated into more than 25 languages.[2] His other notable works include "Jesus Christ in Love", "Psalms of Love", and "Divine Moments".
Early life and education[edit]
Dr Antony was born as John Antony Theodore Vazhakuttathil in Alleppey district of Kerala.[3] He was brought up by his nurse mother whom he called Genova Maa. After early demise of his mother at the age of 36, Antony migrated to USA and Germany. He studied at Fordham University in New York City and Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich. He obtained two bachelor's degrees in science and business administration. Later he pursued academic research in religion and linguistics. He obtained two doctorate degrees in English literature and philosophy of world religions.[4]
Miraculous escape[edit]
In 1986 when Antony was travelling from Mumbai to Frankfurt the Pan Am flight carrying him got hijacked at Karachi airport. In the 16 hour siege 22 of the 400 passengers were killed. Antony miraculously escaped with four gunshot wounds.[5] This traumatic experience completely changed his outlook towards life, and he devoted his life to education and social service, besides seeking catharsis through poetry.
Professional career[edit]
Antony was ordained a pastor and worked as a chaplain in St Martin, Munich. He established several charitable institutions for the homeless and underprivileged people. He had joined the Conservative Party of Canada[6] and ran for election from Markham-Stouffville.[7] He also acted in the movie "66 And Nowhere".[8]
Literary works[edit]
Antony has written more than 5000 poems on the teachings of Jesus Christ. His poems have been published on poetry websites like Poet Freak, Poem Hunter, Starlite Cafe, Micropoet and Poet's Garden etc. Although his poems are based on Christian teachings, he has also written extensively on the universal truths expressed in the holy books of other world religions like Hinduism, Buddhism, Islam, Judaism, Confucianism and Zoroastrianism etc. His most celebrated work is "I am Your Baby, Mother" which has bee translated into more than twenty-five languages including French, Italian, Russian, Greek, Arabic and Hindi. He is equally prolific in both German and English.
Personal life[edit]
Antony Theodore remained unmarried, and spent much of his life in the city of Dortmund in Germany.
India connection[edit]
Although Antony Theodore has lived and worked mostly in Germany, USA and Canada, he has a strong Indian connection, especially with Kashmir and Odisha. Several of his books have been co-authored with the Indian poets Dr Tapan Kumar Pradhan and Bharati Nayak from Odisha. Most of Antony's literary works have allusions to ancient Indian philosophies contained in Vedas, Upanishads, Gita and Brahma Sutras. He retains his association with Diocese of Alleppey in India despite staying in Germany.
Dr Tapan Kumar Pradhan has made a startling revelation in his books that Antony Theodore is a reincarnation of the mystic Kashmir poet scholar Hemangi Sharma.[9]
