Emmanuel Gazmey Santiago(born in Carolina, Puerto Rico on November 27, 1992), known by his stage name Anuel AA, is a Puerto Rican Latin trap and reggaeton artist.

Early life[edit]

Gazmey was born on November 27, 1992, in Carolina, Puerto Rico, to a middle class family. His father, José Gazmey, was the vice president resident of Sony Music in Puerto Rico and was friends with the rapper Tempo. Gazmey studied at the Catholic school Colegio María Auxiliadora which was located in Carolina. He showed great interest in music and decided to become a rapper, signing with label Maybach Music in 2010.

Musical career[edit]

Backed by his father, Tempo, and fellow rapper Nengo Flow, Gazmey released his first song with Nengo Flow, “Demonia” in 2011. This was followed by songs such as “Death Before Dishonor”(2012), “Hay Rumores”(2013), “Nacimos Pa Morir”(featuring Jory Boy)(2015), and “Soldado y Profeta”(2016). Gazmey came to mainstream attention in 2016 with his participation in De La Ghetto’s song “La Ocasión” which also featured Arcangel and Ozuna. That same year he also released “Sola” of which an immensely successful remix was made featuring Daddy Yankee, Wisin, Farruko, and Zion & Lennox.

Gazmey’s music relates to issues such as street life, violence, sex, and drugs. One of his most popular catchphrases in his songs is “Real Hasta La Muerte” or “real until death”. He is one of the most celebrated Latin rappers and is considered a pioneer of the Latin trap movement.

Arrest[edit]

On April 3, 2016, Gazmey was arrested in Santurce, Puerto Rico, on charges of illegally carrying weapons. He was subsequently imprisoned for 30 months, angering many of his fans who launched a campaign called “Free Anuel”. While in prison, Gazmey continued making music. For example, in his song “Ayer 2” with Nicky Jam, Cosculluela, and J Balvin, he recorded his part over a telephone call. Nonetheless, the song was received well.

On July 18, 2018, Gazmey was finally released from prison.

Post-imprisonment music[edit]

On July 17, 2018, the same he was released from prison, Gazmey released his debut album “Real Hasta La Muerte”. This surprise album contained 12 songs and landed at number 1 on Top Latin Albums in less than 24 hours.

Later in August he released a song with the New York rapper 6ix9ine called “BEBE”.
