'Anwar Shahjahan' আনোয়ার শাহজাহান (born November 16, 1973) is a Bangladeshi born British writer, editor and author of history, politics and current affairs. He is the editor of Amader Protidin.[1] Furthermore, he is the founder of Anwar Shahjahan Primary School (Bangladesh), Golapganj Press Club (Sylhet), founder Chairman of SFUK Charity (UK),[2] and a founder member of Golapganj Helping Hands (UK).[3] He published the first history and heritage book of Golapganj Upazila in Sylhet District. It was first published in 1996, now after 19 years the second edition has been published.[4]
Family[edit]
Shahjahan's father, Abdul Mutlib, who was born in April 1933 in Bangladesh, was a tailor; who worked in both Bangladesh (then East Pakistan) and United Arab Emirates (UAE). His mother, Anjumunwara Begum; born in January 1946, was born in Sylhet, Bangladesh. They were married circa 1960, in Sylhet.
Shahjahan was born November 16, 1973, in Sylhet, Bangladesh. His father worked abroad for a brief spell, and his mother worked as a school teacher in a local primary school.
Shahjahan had 12 other siblings, 6 brothers and 6 sisters, Many of his sibling emigrated to countries such as Canada, United Kingdom, Ukraine and the United Arab Emirates. They have since started families in these countries and settled. However, 2 brothers and 2 sisters remained in Bangladesh.
Early life[edit]
Anwar Shahjahan was born in Sylhet, Bangladesh just two years after Bangladesh got their independence. He went to school and college in Golapganj before moving to the UK at the age of 18. He worked full-time and wrote in his spare time for local newspapers and magazines. Anwar worked in restaurants and bought and sold second hand cars, before opening his own restaurant in Ipswich called 'Masha of India'. He then in 2002 moved to Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Wales where he and his wife opened an off licence store. In the following years he opened a real estates company which led to his investments in the UK. In 2011 he founded the Shahjahan Foundation UK.[5] It is a voluntary service organisation located in Erith, Kent, supporting educational, health, social and community projects. The charity operates throughout London, Kent and the Vale of Glamorgan.
Career[edit]
Anwar Shahjahan started writing when he was still in school, he self-published a few poetry books, and some history books on the history of Bangladesh. He published the first history and heritage book in 1996 and then published the second edition in 2015. Anwar held the position of Vice Chairman of Golapganj Helping Hands between 2014 and 2016. He is currently the editor of Amader Protein.
Personal life[edit]
Anwar Shahjahan and his family live in Greater South East London. In 1996 Shahjahan married Nasrin Shahjahan, the oldest daughter of Khaled Ahmed. Shahjahan has four children. Tanvir Shahjahan (b. 1997), Sabbir Shahjahan (b. 2001), Afsana Shahjahan (b. 2005) & Tayyibah Shahjahan (b. 2011)
