Anyline is a mobile optical character recognition (OCR) technology provider based in Vienna, Austria. Founded in 2013, Anyline provides an SDK for scanning text, with an emphasis on reading utility meters, passports, license plates and other standardized codes.[1]
The Anyline SDK is the company’s core product. It’s a cross-platform SDK which can be downloaded for free on both Android and iOS, plus a number of smartglass devices.[2] The SDK contains a number of pre-built modules for scanning utility meters, license plates and passport MRZs. It also contains modules for scanning promotional codes, ISBNs, IBANs and more. Anyline is capable of reading and scanning almost all western written characters.[3] In laboratory settings, it’s scan accuracy is shown to be over 99% accurate.[4]
How it Works[edit]
Anyline was created as an application of machine learning. It’s technology is based on a neural network. A neural network is an artificial intelligence that has been trained to accomplish certain tasks. Once trained, it’s capable of understanding new data through a series of sorting algorithms, similar to a person.[5]
Most OCR SDKs operate on the basis of still photography. A photo is taken and then processed and analyzed to retrieve the relevant data. Anyline uses a device’s video camera instead.[6]
The Anyline SDK can perform scans without a connection to the internet. All scan processing is performed on device.[7]
The SDK is based on TensorFlow from Google. It’s an open-source software library for Machine Intelligence.[8]
Industry Use Cases[edit]
Anyline has been used for the following purposes:
- Reading meters for utilities such as electricity, gas, water, etc,.[9]
- Passport scanning[10]
- License plate scanning[11]
- Document scanning[12]
- Scanning promotional and voucher codes for digital marketing campaigns[13]
Software License[edit]
The Anyline SDK is proprietary software and only available as licensed by Anyline.[14] Use of the software is subject to a user license agreement.[15]
Awards[edit]
- Connected Life Award 2014[16]
- Austrian National AWARD for Multimedia & e-Business 2015[17]
- Austrian Chamber of Commerce – Born Global Champion AWARD, Austrian 2015[18]
- Wearable Technology Show 2016 best AR/VR Company 2016[19]

The company was founded by Lukas Kinigadner, Daniel Albertini, Jakob Hofer, and David Dengg.[20] It has had it’s headquarters in Vienna, Austria since it was founded in 2013.
