The Apereo Foundation (est. in 2012) is a non-profit US organization with the stated goal of creating open source computer programs for use in higher education environments. It is known for developing and supporting Sakai software.[2]

History[edit]

Apereo was founded in late 2012, when Jasig and the Sakai Foundation merged.[3] The name is a combination of Latin words aperto (open) and mereo (merit).[3] Inaugural Apereo Foundation Conference was held in June 2013 in San Diego.[4]

The organization continued to support annual Teaching with Sakai Innovation Award established in 2008.[5][6]

In 2013, Marist College partnered with the University of Amsterdam and several other institutions and organizations to form the Apereo Learning Analytics Initiative (LAI), an open source learning analytics project with the goal of creating an ecosystem of tools to support predictive learning analytics.[7][8]

Licensing policy[edit]

All Apereo software is free, open-source with most of it using preferably the Apache License (e.g. uPortal) or the Educational Community License (e.g. Opencast) though usage of other open-source licenses may be allowed.
